COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind 29 saves from sophomore goaltender Matt Tomkins, the Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 3-0 shutout win over Michigan State in a Big Ten game Friday in Value City Arena. Ohio State had goals from seniors Matt Johnson and Darik Angeli, along with a goal and an assist from sophomore Nick Schilkey, in the victory. After a scoreless first period, the Buckeyes scored twice in the second and then added a goal early in the third for the victory.
The Buckeyes (4-7-1, 1-1-0-0 B1G) head to South Bend, Ind., next week for the Shillelagh Tournament. Friday (Nov. 28), Ohio State will face Western Michigan in the first round, with host Notre Dame taking on defending NCAA champion Union. Championship and consolation games will be held Nov. 29.
Ohio State and Michigan State (4-7-0, 1-1-0-0 B1G) combined for 25 shots in the first period, with Ohio State, which had the only power play chance, putting 14 on the Spartan net. Tomkins stopped all 11 shots he faced in the stanza.
In the second period, Ohio State took a 1-0 lead on Johnson’s third goal of the year. The goal was not called on the ice during play. At the next break, more than a minute later, the officials went to video replay and it showed the puck had crossed the line, giving Ohio State the lead at 2:16. A pass from senior Chad Niddery, who was led into the zone by freshman Christian Lampasso, went off Johnson and over the line with the MSU goaltender deep in the net. At 7:54 Schilkey, standing just outside the crease, had a perfect redirection of a shot from classmate Drew Brevig with the Buckeyes on the power play, giving Ohio State a 2-0 lead. A third sophomore, David Gust, had the second assist on the goal. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Spartans in the period. Ohio State had two power play chances and stopped the Spartans on one opportunity, which came at 5:01 and was shortened after a MSU penalty.
At 3:14 of the third period, Angeli completed a rush up the ice, scoring off a pass from Schilkey, with junior Sam Jardine on the second assist. Jardine is tied for first on the team with six assists this year and has a helper in four of his last five games. Tomkins stopped all 11 Michigan State attempts in the period and helped the Ohio State penalty kill stop two Spartan chances. The Spartans pulled Hildebrand with more than three minutes left for the extra attacker, but could not convert and a MSU penalty at 18:11 ended the threat.
The Spartans ended the game outshooting the Buckeyes, 29-28. Tomkins played all 60 minutes in his first career shutout, making 29 saves. He now has a 2.11 goals-against average and .917 save percentage on the year, playing in eight games. Hildebrand played 58:22 for the Spartans and made 25 saves. Ohio State blocked 16 Spartan shots, with Schilkey and junior Craig Dalrymple blocking three each to lead the way.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on the power play, marking their first power play goal in four games. The squad was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill after giving up a goal in each of the last two games.
The shutout was the Buckeyes’ first since Logan Davis blanked Canisius Nov. 15, 2013. It was the program’s fourth shutout of the Spartans in 125 games between the schools and the first since a 1-0 win Nov. 30, 2012.
