COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University women’s volleyball program added two future Buckeyes during the early signing period. Taylor Hughes and Megan Wickey will don the Scarlet & Gray uniforms beginning in the 2015 season after signing National Letters of Intent on Wednesday (Nov. 12).
Hughes is a native Buckeye hailing from Carroll, Ohio. Wickey, meanwhile, comes to Columbus via Omaha, Neb., joining current sophomore setter Maggie Heim as Omaha products. Both Buckeye signees were recently named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team.
Hughes, a six-foot-one setter, has been on PrepVolleyball.com’s radar for some time now, tabbed by the publication as a Senior Ace (#35), Top-50 Junior, and on the Sophomore 79 list. She was placed on the AVCA Phenom List in 2013 as well. She is a three-time All-Ohio honoree, receiving First Team recognition as an upperclassmen in 2013 and 2014. Hughes is a consistent winner, guiding Bloom-Carroll High School to four consecutive league titles, including three undefeated conference seasons. She also earned Tournament MVP honors at the 2014 USA High Performance Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Taylor Hughes (6)
“We have known Taylor and her family for a long time and are really excited to have her become a part of our Buckeye Family,” said Geoff Carlston, Ohio State head coach. “She’s a special player, a great leader and tenacious competitor.”
Wickey is an all-state performer as well, picking up All-Nebraska laurels all four seasons of her high school career. The 6’2? outside hitter was slotted No. 39 in PrepVolleyball.com’s Senior Aces list and selected for the AVCA Phenom List. She attacked at nearly a .500 clip during her senior campaign, putting away over 5.5 kills per set for Concordia High. Wickey was also a three-year starter in club volleyball as a member of Nebraska Elite Volleyball.
Megan Wickey
“Megan has become one of the strongest six-rotation outside hitters in the country,” said Carlston. “She is dynamic, loves to play the game and is a great fit for our program.”
Taylor is the daughter of Doug and Desiree Hughes and the youngest of four Hughes children, all of which play/played/will play a collegiate sport. The oldest, Ashley, was a member of the OSU volleyball team from 2006-09. The lone brother, Ryan, competed on the gridiron for Malone University Football (2008-09) while sister, Cassie, played volleyball in 2013 at Columbus State Community College.
Megan is the daughter of Wade and Susan Wickey and comes from an athletic family as well. Her sister, Taylor, is currently a sophomore on the University of Central Florida volleyball team.
