COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by the line of seniors Nick Oddo and Chad Niddery and freshman Kevin Miller, the Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 4-1 win over Canisius Saturday in HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York. The Buckeyes (2-3-1, 0-0-0 B1G) scored once in both the first and second periods before two early third-period goals put the game out of reach for the Golden Griffins (4-3-1, 3-1-0 AHA).
The Buckeyes will play five of their next six games at home, beginning with a two-game series against Nebraska Omaha next weekend. The squads will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena. After a home-and-home series with Bowling Green Nov. 14 (at BG) and Nov. 15 (home), Ohio State will open Big Ten play with two games vs. Michigan State in Columbus Nov. 20-21.
Against the Golden Griffins, Oddo scored twice and added an assist for three points. It was his second career two-goal night (Oct. 25, 2013 vs. Robert Morris) and his fifth career three-point outing. With three assists, Niddery had his second career multiple-assist and multiple-point game, after two helpers March 2 vs. Michigan. Miller had a goal and an assist for his first points as a Buckeye. Sophomore defenseman Josh Healey had two assists for his first multiple-point game for the Scarlet and Gray.
The teams were scoreless until the 14:35 mark of the first period when Oddo scored on a rebound, assisted by Niddery and Miller. Ohio State outshot Canisius, 13-10, in the period and the Golden Griffins had the only two power plays of the stanza.
Ohio State made it 2-0 at 6:14 of the second period when senior Darik Angeli scored on a deflection, set up by Healey and freshman Matthew Weis. The Buckeyes had 15 shots in the period, holding Canisius to six. Each team had one chance with the man advantage in the stanza.
The Buckeyes scored two early goals in the third period to extend the lead. Oddo scored his second of the game at 2:48. Healey held the puck in at the blue line and passed to Niddery, who found Oddo in front. Just 29 seconds later, Miller scored on the rush, assisted by Oddo and Niddery. Canisius broke up the shutout with an unassisted shorthanded goal by Braeden Rigney at 15:34. The Buckeyes put 13 shots on net in the stanza, with Canisius getting five through. Ohio State had two power play chances in the period and the Golden Griffins had one opportunity.
For the game, the Buckeyes had a season-high 41 shots, holding Canisius to an opponent season-low 21. Sophomore Matt Tomkins made 20 saves on 21 shots in all 60 minutes for the Buckeyes. For the series, Tomkins made 46 saves on 48 shots in 123:07, for a .97 goals-against average and .958 save percentage. Canisius goalie Reilly Turner started and played the first 51:37, allowing four goals and making 33 saves. Adam Harris played the last 8:23 and had four saves.
The Buckeye power play was held scoreless for the second night in a row, going 0-for-3. The squad did not allow the Golden Griffins to score with the man advantage in the series, stopping four chances Saturday and eight in the two games combined.
