COLUMBUS, Ohio– The third-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team remained unbeaten on the season (10-0) after defeating No. 14 Texas 4-0 in the first round of the 2012 National Team Indoor Championship. The Buckeyes will face No. 6 Kentucky at 9 a.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The University of Virginia is serving as hosts.
Devin McCarthy, the nation’s 65th ranked player, beat Chris Camillone 6-3, 6-2 to claim the match-deciding fourth point.
Ohio State improves to 2-5 all-time against the Longhorns, who are 6-5 this season. Both Buckeye wins have occurred during the last two seasons at the ITA National Team Indoors Championship. The Scarlet and Gray defeated Texas 4-1 in the quarterfinals last season.
In a close doubles session, Ohio State edged Texas thanks to a 7-4 tiebreaker win on court three by Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith. The Buckeye duo beat Daniel Whitehead and Sudanwa Sitaram 9-8 to break the 1-all tie after matches on courts one and two split decisions.
“The doubles point is important in every match, Ty Tucker, head coach, said. “We had some early momentum at No. 1 and No. 3, but gave it back at No. 3. Texas served for the match, maybe got a little tight, but we played a good game to break. We were able to play a good tiebreak in the end. In singles, we got out to some 3-0 leads, 4-0 leads. Our guys were able to breathe a little easier at that point.”
Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the nation’s top-ranked tandem, were victorious against Soren Hess-Olesen and Alex Hilliard 8-2 on court one to give Ohio State the early advantage. However, Texas would return the favor with an 8-3 win on court two when Chris Camillone and David Holiner downed McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen, the 27th-ranked duo in the country.
Van Engelen was the first Buckeye finished in singles action after quickly defeating Lloyd Glasspool 6-2, 6-0 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. Rola, ranked 12th in the nation, beat Whitehead 6-0, 6-3 to extend Ohio State’s lead.
McCarthy posted his victory soon after for the Buckeyes on court five.
As the third-ranked team nationally, Ohio State is an outstanding 72-2.
With the win, the Buckeyes are 13-10 all-time in the tournament. This season is Ohio State’s 12th-consecutive in the event. The Scarlet and Gray were the runners-up in 2007 and 2008 and advanced to the semifinals the previous two seasons. In 2009, Ohio State played its way into the quarterfinals.
