COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior forward Natalie Spooner scored the game-tying goal early in the third, but a late St. Cloud State goal gave the Huskies a 4-3 win over the Ohio State women’s hockey team Saturday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. With the score, Spooner became the program’s all-time leading goal scorer with 87 in her career.
Spooner tied Jeni Creary’s (2002-05) Ohio State record of 86 career goals in last night’s 2-0 win at SCSU, notching both goals in the game. The Scarborough, Ontario, product also finished with an assist in today’s loss to move her career points total to 140 for fourth-best in the program’s history.
The Huskies started the game off strong, scoring three of their four goals in the first period. Jaclyn Daggit found the back of the net at 7:30 with assists to Lisa Martinson and Amanda Monkman. Less than three minutes later, Molli Mott scored an even-strength goal at 10:12. Brittany Toor and Cari Coen each had a hand in the goal.
SCSU’s Alex Nelson gave the home squad a 3-0 lead at 15:51 and the Huskies looked to go to the first intermission with a three-goal advantage, but Ohio State responded at 16:14 with an even-strength goal by freshman Taylor Kuehl. The score was the first-career goal of Kuehl’s career and she was assisted by junior Tina Hollowell and freshman Kayla Sullivan.
The game didn’t see another score until late in the second when sophomore Ally Tarr scored her 10th goal of the season to cut SCSU’s lead to one at 3-2. A Husky penalty at 16:28 put the Buckeyes on the power play and the team capitalized on the 5-on-4 opportunity when Tarr scored at 17:25. She was assisted by Sullivan and Spooner.
Ohio State tied the game at 5:27 when Spooner tallied her record-tying and 18th goal of the season to lock the score at three apiece. Dishing out a helper on the goal was junior Hokey Langan and sophomore Madison Marcotte.
Despite being out-shot by the Buckeyes throughout the entire game, the Huskies found a game-winner at 14:20 when Toor scored her fourth goal of the season to give SCSU a 4-3 win.
Ohio State finished with a 44-22 advantage in shots, but Husky goalie Julie Friend was hard to get by as she picked up 41 saves to improve to 3-5-0. Sophomore Lisa Steffes started in net, but was replaced by Chelsea Knapp in the first period. Steffes totaled eight saves, while Knapp finished with 10 and the loss to fall to 3-3-3.
Ohio State continues its WCHA road swing, traveling to Bemidji State for a two-game conference series against the Beavers, Jan. 14-15. The puck drops at 8:07 p.m. ET both days from the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
