Ohio State Tops Minnesota to Open 2012 – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team opened the 2012 campaign with a 195.375-195.075 victory over Minnesota Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis. The score for the Buckeyes was the highest score in a season-opening meet in program history.
“I think this is the best start to the season we have ever had,” head coach Carey Fagan said. “I am really proud of the team. It was a great team effort tonight but we know we can improve and are looking forward to building on this start.”
The Buckeyes began the meet on bars, tallying a 48.850 to a 48.550 for Minnesota. Casey Williamson tallied a team-high 9.800 to tie for the event title while Colleen Dean and Alyssa Marohn each scored a 9.775.
Ohio State then won vault in the second rotation, narrowly besting the Golden Gophers 49.100-49.050. 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Sarah Miller came out strong in her sophomore season with a career-high 9.925 to win the event. Dean tied her career best with a 9.825 while co-captain Taylor Jones and Marohn each scored a 9.800 as the Buckeyes held a 97.950-97.600 advantage after two events.
Miller, Dean and Melanie Shaffer paced the Buckeyes on floor exercise, each tallying a 9.825, to help the Buckeyes tie the Golden Gophers with a 49.075.
The Buckeyes then finished the night with a 48.350 on balance beam. Miller and co-captain Nicole Krauter tied for the event title with a 9.850.
The Buckeyes will be back in action Friday, traveling to Michigan for a 6 p.m. meet in Ann Arbor.
