Ohio State Travels to Toledo for Inverness Intercollegiate – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a busy start to the season, the Ohio State men’s golf team will continue its fall campaign at the Inverness Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Toledo. The 54-hole tournament will be the third competition for the Buckeyes this season, and will take place Sept. 26-27 at the distinguished par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Ohio State returns to action as the 23rd-ranked squad after a short break following fall qualifying, the Marshall Invitational and the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. In all, the young group has already experienced 10 rounds of play in nine days (Sept. 9-18).

THE BUCKEYE LINEUP
Earning a spot in the five-person lineup are seniors Dan Charen and Alex Redfield, junior Matt Turner, redshirt freshman Logan Jones and freshman Boo Timko. Playing as an individual is freshman Grant Weaver. Charen, Redfield and Timko have two tournaments under their belt, while Turner, Jones and Weaver have each competed in one tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
Following an impressive outing at the Marshall Invitational, Ohio State traveled to Olympia Fields, Ill., for the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 16-18.
The tournament featured a tough 15-team field including Stanford, the tournament champion and 12th-ranked team nationally. No.9 Auburn, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Alabama, No.5 Texas, Florida State, No.7 Florida, No. 13 Illinois, Notre Dame, No. 22 Augusta State as well as previously 20th-ranked Ohio State rounded out the top 10.
The Buckeyes finished the weekend tied for tenth, with a 54-hole total of 890 (+50) at the par 70, 7,205-yard North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club. Individually, Ohio State was led by freshman Boo Timko, who continued to impress early in his OSU career by finishing 10-over 220 for a 25th-place tie.
THE COMPETITION
Ohio State won’t get a break from tough competition as the tournament is once again stacked with some of the top competition in the nation. The 11-team field includes three other Big Ten schools – No. 34 Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State – as well as ranked opponents No. 6 Florida, No. 32 Kent State and No. 33 Liberty.
Also competing traveling to Inverness for the meet are Toledo, East Tennessee State, Kentucky and South Alabama.
A LOOK AT THE LINKS
The Inverness Intercollegiate will be held at the Inverness Club, which was founded in 1902. The club has hosted two NCAA championship matches, one in 1944 won by the University of Notre Dame and another in 2009 won by Texas A&M in a thriller. Along with NCAAs, the course has hosted prestigious competitions such as the PGA championship, U.S. Amateur championship, U.S. Senior Open along with the U.S. Open.
The club also is known for its rich history. When Inverness hosted the U.S. Open in 1920 it broke tradition by allowing professional golfers to use the course’s clubhouse for the first time in history, which triggered a change in the way the profession was viewed socially. As a token of their gratitude the players of the 1931 U.S. Open, also hosted at Inverness, purchased a grandfather clock for the clubhouse, which still remains in the location to this day.
WEATHER REPORT
At this point there appears to be a chance for some rain in the forecast according to weather.com. Monday there is a 50 percent chance for precipitation with scattered thunderstorms listed as a possibility. Unfortunately, the chance for rain continues into Tuesday with once again a 50 percent chance of showers. The temperature, however, should be comfortable remaining in the mid to high 60s.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM
Ohio natives, Bruce (Boo) Timko and Grant Weaver will be making their debut for the Scarlet and Gray this season.
Timko is from Girard, Ohio, and attended Canfield High School after two years at Warren JFK High School. He was named team MVP, all-league and all-district all four seasons and served as team captain the past three years. Timko also earned all-state honors as a junior and senior after leading Canfield to back-to-back All American Conference titles and qualifying for the state tournament all four seasons.
He is the son of Bruce and Denise Timko; his father is a member of the Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame after playing basketball for the Penguins. His cousin, John Simon, also is a defensive lineman on the Ohio State football team.
Weaver is from Wooster, Ohio, and attended Waynedale High School. The 2010 Northern Ohio PGA player of the year, he was a four-year starter and helped Waynedale to Wayne County Athletic League championships each season. He was a two-time state runner-up and district medalist with an 18-hole stroke average of 70.8 his senior year.
The son of Ron and Joanna Weaver, Grant was involved with the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes in high school. A member of the youth group at Fairlawn Mennonite Church, he has taken week-long mission trips the last three years around the U.S. to work with homeless and inner-city children.
UP NEXT
After another short break, the Buckeyes will host the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at the legend’s personally designed Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The tournament will consist of three rounds and held Oct. 10-11.
