First held in 1968, the 2011 Marshall Invitational will be the 42nd playing of the annual tournament. DOMINATING THE LINKS
The Buckeyes hold the most team titles at the Marshall Invitational with 18 in total, their last win coming last season. A runner-up seven times total, the Scarlet and Gray claimed victory in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2001, 2004 as well as 2010.
On the individual side, Ohio State golfers have claimed 14 titles with the most recent one claimed by Kevin Hall in 2004. Jamie Sindelar’s father, Joey, won the Marshall Invitational in 1980.
LAST TIME OUT
Ohio State had an impressive showing last year at the Marshall Invitational setting the team 54-hole scoring record at 820 (-32), more than doubling the previous low of 15-under set by Louisville in 2005. The Buckeyes defeated Xavier by more than seven shots, marking the first victory under head coach Donnie Darr.
Individually, the Buckeyes had three top ten finishers. Jamie Sindelar finished tied for second and only five shots back from individual champ Sebastian MacLean of Xavier (with a record-setting 197). Another returnee placing in the top 10 was Alex Redfield who tied for seventh at 6-under.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM
Ohio natives, Bruce (Boo) Timko and Grant Weaver will be making their debut for the Scarlet and Gray this season.
Timko is from Girard, Ohio, and attended Canfield High School after two years at Warren JFK High School. He was named team MVP, all-league and all-district all four seasons and served as team captain the past three years. Timko also earned all-state honors as a junior and senior after leading Canfield to back-to-back All American Conference titles and qualifying for the state tournament all four seasons.
He is the son of Bruce and Denise Timko; his father is a member of the Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame after playing basketball for the Penguins. His cousin, John Simon, also is a defensive lineman on the Ohio State football team.
Weaver is from Wooster, Ohio, and attended Waynedale High School. The 2010 Northern Ohio PGA player of the year, he was a four-year starter and helped Waynedale to Wayne County Athletic League championships each season. He was a two-time state runner-up and district medalist with an 18-hole stroke average of 70.8 his senior year.
The son of Ron and Joanna Weaver, Grant was involved with the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes in high school. A member of the youth group at Fairlawn Mennonite Church, he has taken week-long mission trips the last three years around the U.S. to work with homeless and inner-city children.
