Buckeyes Defeated By No. 2 Old Dominion, 2-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– In the final game of the 2011 Buckeye Classic, the Ohio State field hockey team fell, 2-0, against No. 2 Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Lady Monarchs (6-0) posted two goals in the first half en route to the victory against the Buckeyes (2-5).
Old Dominion opened the scoring in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. After earning a penalty corner, Emma Batten connected off a rebound in front of the cage at 11:27 for the unassisted goal.
Following a 30 minute delay due to lightning in the Columbus area, both teams returned to the turf with eight minutes left to go in the first half. ODU extended its lead to 2-0 after senior midfielder Stephanie Kratzer scored following a penalty corner with assists coming from freshman midfielder Kelsey Smither and Condie. The ball was deflected high into the circle and bounced into the goal at 31:47.
Late in the first half, the Buckeyes tallied four penalty corners on four shots but could not find the back of the cage.
In the second half, the Scarlet and Gray outshot the Lady Monarchs, 6-1.
Ohio State held an 11-9 advantage on shots and an 8-5 lead in penalty corners.
Senior back Jenn Sciulli posted her third defensive save of 2011 vs. the Lady Monarchs in the first half. The native of Palmyra, Pa., Sciulli now has 17 career stops and is five saves away from tying former Buckeye Kim Bush (1988-91) for second on the OSU all-time list.
Senior goalkeeper Ally Tunitis started for the Buckeyes and made three saves in the first. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Voelkercame into the game in the final 35 minutes for her first appearance of 2011.
Ohio State continues its home schedule next week with a matchup vs. ACC-opponent Wake Forest at 3 p.m. Friday at Buckeye Varsity Field.
