COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jeff Treleaven, a rising sophomore on the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, earned the top vault score in the senior division at the 2011 U.S. Men’s Qualifier at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Treleaven is one four Buckeyes who qualified to compete at the 2011 Visa Championships, the USA Gymnastics national championships, in Saint Paul, Minn., Aug. 17-20. Rising senior Ty Echard and former Buckeyes Sean Regan and Tai Lee will travel along with Treleaven next month to the nation’s elite event.
Joining the four Buckeyes in Minnesota will be current U.S. National Team member Brandon Wynn, who will look to defend his rings title as well as compete for his first U.S. championship in the all-around competition.
“This is a big accomplishment for our program as five Buckeyes will be competing at the U.S. championship, which matches with the top schools in the country,” head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “A good goal for these guys will be to earn enough points to make the national team. Brandon will look to make his second world team.”
Treleaven, a native of Glen Ellyn, Ill., performed on four events at the U.S. qualifier highlighted by the top vault score at the competition. Treleaven earned his first career All-America honor this past spring after notching a 16.100 on vault for third place at the NCAA event championships in Columbus. The second-year Buckeye will be competing at his first U.S. championship.
Lee, a four-year letterman for the Buckeyes from 2007-10, highlighted the all-around competition with a fourth-place finish, posting an 81.000. Lee notched three Top 10 performances, including third on high bar (14.200), sixth on vault (15.150) and tied for eighth on floor exercise (13.900). This is Lee’s first qualification for the senior division at the Visa Championships.
Echard, a native of Carroll, Ohio, finished second overall on pommel horse with a 14.350 score. The two-time All-American on the event will compete at his first-career U.S. national championship. Regan, who completed his four seasons in the Scarlet and Gray this past spring, also represented the Buckeyes in the all-around competition, claiming a 78.300 mark for 13th place.
Regan also had a strong outing, finishing tied for sixth on floor exercise (13.950), seventh on rings (13.750) and tied for seventh on vault (15.100). This is Regan’s first qualification for the U.S. national championships.
“With only about four and half weeks away, these guys will have a pretty demanding schedule,” Sharipov said. “I think they are excited and I’m looking forward to see what adjustments they will make after a successful competition this past weekend.”
In all, 29 gymnasts qualified for the national championships, which will feature the country’s best gymnasts vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team. NBC Sports and Universal Sports will broadcast and webcast the action from both the men’s and women’s gymnastics competition.
