COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State track and field and cross country head coach Robert Gary has signed a 3-year contract extension that will keep him with the Buckeyes through the 2014 season.
Entering his sixth season as the head men’s track and field coach and 16th coaching the cross country team, Gary has elevated both programs to new heights and established himself as one of the nation’s elite coaches – his teams have consistently placed within the top 3 of the Big Ten Conference, while also challenging for awards and honors at the regional and national levels.
“Coach Gary has done a remarkable job leading both our men’s track and field and cross country teams over the past 5 years and has positioned the program in the top tier of the Big Ten,” said T.J. Shelton, Associate Director of Athletics for Sport Administration. “He has proven to be an excellent recruiter and developer of young talent and we are excited about the future under his leadership.”
A 1996 graduate of The Ohio State University, Gary was a six-event All-American for the Buckeyes, winning the Big Ten outdoor 3000-meter steeplechase title in 1994, where he set the Ohio State and Big Ten record in the event. He ended a decorated professional running career in 2005 as a two-time Olympian and member of 11 U.S. cross country national teams. He was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
