Ohio State Soars Up Leaderboard at NCAA West Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team jumped eight spots on the leaderboard at the NCAA West Regional Friday, moving from an 11th-place tie to third. The Buckeyes score of 279 (-9) brings their two-day score to 579 on the par 72, 6,947-yard The Farms Golf Club in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. In order to advance to the NCAA Championships, Ohio State must stay in the top five with just one round remaining.
Though its commanding lead has shrank to just four strokes over second-place UCLA, Southern California will head into the final round in first with a total score of 568 (-8). UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay holds the individual lead with a two-round total of 136 (-8).
The Scarlet and Gray surge was headed by senior Michael Cress with a 4-under 68. Cress tallied five birdies to just one bogey to move into a tie for 12th place with a total score of 143. Junior Dan Charen was just off Cress’ pace, carding a 3-under 69. Charen posted five birdies to only two bogeys and will head into the final round in a tie for 15th with a two-round total of 144.
Senior Brad Smith also chipped in a solid performance for Ohio State, posting a 2-under 70 round to bring his total to 145. With three birdies on the day, Smith is currently tied for 23rd place. Fellow fourth-year Bo Hoag notched an even-par 72 to aid the effort and moved into a tie for 32nd place with a total score of 147. Rounding out the effort for the Buckeyes was sophomore Zack Sobel with an 85 on the day.
The NCAA West Regional will conclude with the final round Saturday. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. PT.
