COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team completed their four-week spring training session with a 6-1-2 record. OSU posted wins over Ohio University, Morehead State, Wright State, Xavier, Kent State and Cleveland State in matches played in Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati.
The Buckeyes were led offensively by All-Big 10 Honorable Mention selection junior middle blocker Kelli Barhorst and two year starting right side Emily Danks. Junior middle blocker Mariah Booth stepped up big on the blocking side of the net and newcomer Mari Hole was a major part of the team’s offensive production playing all-around and leading the Scarlet and Gray with her intensity. Amanda Peterson had a strong showing in her first spring leading the Buckeyes from the setter position. She controlled the tempo of the offense and kept opposing blockers off-balance.
“I thought we grew up a lot as a team this spring, especially the last half of the season,” noted head coach Geoff Carlston. “We are going to be a young group, there’s no doubt about that, but the leadership and competitive fire we began to foster by the end of April was great to witness. We became a team.”
Ohio State will open the 2011 season Aug. 25th at the West Virginia Mountaineer Invitational. The Buckeyes will also play in tournaments in Hawaii and Toledo and host the Sports Imports Invitational, Sept. 16-17. OSU will open Big Ten play at Iowa on Sept 23.
