Athlete of the Week
Junior Heath Nickles was named co-Big Ten Field Athlete of the WeekDec. 12 by the conference office after his record-settingperformance Dec. 10 at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. Nicklesput on a spectacular show at the two-day event in Kent, Ohio,capturing first place in the heptathlon with a school and KentState Field House record-score of 5602. He posted PRs in five ofseven events: pole vault (5.30m/17-4.50), shot put(13.76m/45-1.75), 60m hurdles (8.41), high jump (1.93m/6-4) and 60mdash (7.32). The first place showing in the pole vault was thesecond-best indoor mark in school history and would have been thesecond-best mark in the Big Ten for the entire 2011 season.
Athletics
Sixty-six Ohio State student-athletes have been named AcademicAll-Big Ten, the conference office announced Dec. 7. In all, 786conference student-athletes from seven sports were honored.
At fall commencement ceremonies in the Schottenstein Center Dec.11, 26 current and former Ohio State student-athletes will beawarded degrees. The group has representatives from 16 sports,including All-Americans and all-conference honorees.
No. 2 Men’s Basketball (8-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Thomas Robinson scored 21 points, Elijah Johnson added 15 andNo. 13 Kansas never trailed in a 78-67 victory Dec. 9 oversecond-ranked Ohio State, which had to play without star forwardJared Sullinger due to an injury. William Buford had 17 of his 21 points in the second half forOhio State, which was playing on the road for the first time thisseason. Deshaun Thomas added 19 points.

Ohio State junior guard Tayler Hill claimed her first career Big Ten player of the weekhonor Dec. 5 in recognition of her performance last week in winsover Florida State and on the road at No. 18 Oklahoma.
Hill and Samantha Prahalis combined for 41 points as No. 13 Ohio Statedominated from the start in an 84-41 win over Canisius Dec. 9 atValue City Arena.
Football (6-6, 3-5 Big Ten)

TomHerman, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach atIowa State University the past three years, and before that anoffensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for record-settingoffenses at Rice University, has been named offensive coordinatorand quarterbacks coach at The Ohio State University.
No. 4 Men’s Ice Hockey (13-4-1, 10-3-1-1 CCHA)

Senior Cal Heeter has been named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week afterbackstopping Ohio State to a weekend sweep of Lake Superior State,the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Dec. 5. Heeterhad 58 saves in the series with the Lakers, allowing just threegoals.
No. 4-ranked Ohio State lost for the first time in 12 games,falling to Miami, 5-3, Dec. 9 in Value City Arena.
Freshman Chad Niddery’s overtime goal gave No. 4-ranked Ohio State a 3-2road victory over Miami Dec. 10 at Steve Cady Arena inOxford.
Women’s Ice Hockey (9-7-2, 6-7-1-1 WCHA)

Unable to close the gap after three quick Minnesota goals inthe first stanza, Ohio State fell, 4-1, to the No. 2 Golden GophersDec. 10 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
Ohio State closed out the first half of the season with a 3-1 lossto No. 2 Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 11in the second game of the WCHA series.
Men’s Lacrosse

TurnerEvans, Reegan Comeault and Jesse King – all freshmen on the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team- have been named to the squad that will represent Canada at the2012 FIL Under 19 Men’s Field World Championship. They will bejoined by Buckeye classmate Luke Howard, who will play for Team USA at the tournament,which will be held July 12-21 in Turku, Finland.
Defensemen Matt Kawamoto and Joe Bonanni and attackman Logan Schuss all earned preseason honors in the 2012 Face-OffYearbook released by Inside Lacrosse. Kawamoto, a USILA honorablemention All-American last year, is a third team preseasonAll-American by IL, while Schuss is a preseason honorable mentionchoice. The duo is joined by Bonanni on IL’s preseason All-ECACteam.

Ohio State’s Mari Hole was named to the 2011 AVCA All-Mideast Region teamwhile Emily Danks garnered honorable mention honors, the AVCAannounced Dec. 6.
Ohio State concluded the 2011 campaign Dec. 9 in Gainesville, Fla.,with a 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 19-25) loss to third-seed Illinoisin the regional semifinal of the NCAA Division I Women’s VolleyballChampionships.

LoganStieber, a member of the No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team, wasnamed Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week the conference announced Dec.6. Stieber shares the honor with Iowa’s Tony Ramos.
Four consecutive Buckeye wins at 133, 141, 149 and 157 pounds toend the match propelled No. 6 Ohio State to a 22-9 win over No. 9Pittsburgh Dec. 9 at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa. Withthe match tied, 9-9, a quartet of freshmen in Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber, Cam Tessari and Josh Demas lifted the Buckeyes to their fifth dual win of theseason, while also maintaining a perfect record.
Bonus points scored by No. 6 Ohio State proved to be the differencemaker in the Buckeyes’ 22-15 win over No. 20 Kent State Dec. 10 inthe M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio. Despite Ohio State and Kent Statewinning five matches each, pins by Logan Stieber and C.J. Magrum, as well as a major decision by Hunter Stieber lifted the Scarlet and Gray to its sixth dualwin of the season.
