No. 22 OSU Wins at Wisconsin, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State (17-9 overall, 7-6 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team won a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21) decision at Wisconsin (13-12, 5-8) Friday night in front of 3,970 fans. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a match-high 19.5 points in the match with 15 kills (.175) three ace serves and three assist blocks. Kaitlyn Leary added 15 points with 13 kills (.321) and four assist blocks. Badger Ellen Chapman recorded a team-high 12.5 points for Wisconsin with 11 kills (.135), one ace serve and one assist block. Alexis Mitchell added 10.5 points with eight kills (.190) and five assist blocks.
Wisconsin opened set one with an Ellen Chapman ace serve and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes tied the set at two with a kill from Leary and a Kelli Barhorst-Leary block. An OSU error, a Dominique Thompson ace serve and a Bailey Reshel kill put the Badgers ahead for good at 5-3. Wisconsin expanded the lead to 17-10. Trailing, 22-17, a kill from Danks, a Danks-Mariah Booth block and a Badger error cut the lead to two at 22-20. After a Wisconsin time out, a Chapman kill and an OSU error gave the Badgers set point at 24-20. Wisconsin won the set, 25-20, with a Chapman kill to lead the match, 1-0. The Badgers hit .172 for the set to .059 for the Buckeyes.
Set two saw six early ties, the last at six. The Buckeyes took control of the match with a Mari Hole kill, a Danks-Booth block, and a Hole-Booth block to take a 9-6 lead. Wisconsin cut the lead to one at 15-14 with a Janelle Gabrielsen-Thomson block. OSU responded with a Booth kill, a Booth-Danks block and a second Booth kill to open an 18-14 lead. OSU held a 20-18 lead when a Badger error and two ace serves from Danks gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-18. Badger kills from Courtney Thomas and Thompson stopped two set points to cut the lead to 24-20. Ohio State, with a Leary kill, won the set, 25-20, to tie the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .200 for the set to .136 for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin held the early lead in the third set, 6-2. OSU cut the lead to one at 6-5 with an ace serve from Danks, a Leary kill and a Badger error. An OSU error, a Leary kill and a Davionna DiSalvatore ace serve tied the set at seven. Tied at 14 behind the serving of Sarah Mignin, a Barhorst block, a Mignin ace serve and a Badger error gave the Buckeyes a 17-14 lead. A Reshel block made it 17-15. Two kills from Danks and one from Leary opened a 20-15 Ohio State lead. At 23-18, two kills from Danks closed out the set at 25-18 to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .235 for the set to .062 for Wisconsin.
Ohio State trailed 2-1 in the fourth set before a Booth kill tied the set at two and started an eight point Buckeye run. A Booth-Leary block and her kill with two Badger errors forced a Wisconsin timeout at 6-2. The run continued with a Badger error, a Booth-Leary block and a kill from Hole for a 9-2 lead. Ohio State held the lead at 20-13 before a five point Badger run cut the margin to two at 20-18. Kills from Danks and Leary made it 22-18. A Chapman kill made it 22-19. A kill from Danks and a Leary-Barhorst block gave OSU match point at 24-19. Wisconsin stopped two match points with a Chapman kill and a Buckeye error. Ohio State, with a Barhorst kill, won the set, 25-21, to win the match, 3-1. For the set, Ohio State hit .171 to .026 for Wisconsin.
Ohio State hit .168 for the match to .098 for Wisconsin. The Buckeyes had a 52-44 advantage in kills and a 52-43 margin in assists. Buckeye Taylor Sherwin posted a match-high 27 assists with Amanda Peterson adding 21. Wisconsin’s Gabrielsen recorded 23 assists with Thomas adding 16. The Buckeyes had a 6-5 edge in ace serves with OSU’s Danks posting a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up seven service errors to six for Wisconsin. Defensively, OSU had a 59-54 margin in digs with Annemarie Hickey posting a match-high 22 for Wisconsin. OSU’s Mignin recorded a team-high 16 digs. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 14 to 11.5 margin in team blocks. Booth, posted a match-high nine blocks (one solo, eight assists) for Ohio State while Mitchell had a team-high five assist blocks for Wisconsin.
Ohio State continues on the road Saturday when the face 15th-ranked Minnesota at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.
