WVB: Buckeyes Outlast Wisconsin in Five Sets – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (13-1 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) needed five sets to secure a 3-2 (25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) victory over previously undefeated Wisconsin (11-1, 0-1) Friday night at the UW Field House. Buckeye Katie Dull scored a team-high 20.5 points in the match with Anna Szerszen adding 12. Dull recorded 19 kills (.240) and three assist blocks while Szerszen posted 12 kills (.360). Wisconsin’s Allison Wack had a match-high 23 points with 20 kills (.184), two ace serves and one solo block. Elise Walch added 16 points with 16 kills (.250).
With the first set tied at 10, two Sarah Mignin ace serves, an Emily Danks-Allie Schwarzwalder block and a kill from Danks gave Ohio State a 14-10 lead. A Walch kill made it 14-11. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to six (17-11) with kills from Danks and Dull and an ace serve by Danks. Leading, 23-15, a Kelli Barhorst kill gave Ohio State set point. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-15, with a kill from Dull to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .355 for the set to .097 for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin, in set two, broke an 8-8 tie with kills from Wack, Julie Mikaelsen and Dominique Thompson for an 11-8 lead. A Banks-Mariah Booth block and errors by both teams made it 12-10. Three Buckeye errors and kills from Thompson and Walch gave Wisconsin a 17-10 lead. The Badgers held the lead and reached set point at 24-16 with an OSU error. A Mikaelsen kill gave Wisconsin a 25-16 set win and tied the match at one game each. The Badgers hit .250 for the set to .059 for Ohio State.
The third set saw four lead changes and eight ties. Tied at seven, two Wisconsin errors and a Booth solo block gave Ohio State a 10-7 lead. At 16-12, kills from Wack, Walch and an Alexis Mitchell-Mikaelsen block cut the OSU lead to one at 16-15. Kills from Booth and Dull opened an 18-15 OSU lead. Wisconsin tied the set at 18, with kills from Walch and Janelle Gabrielsen and a Mitchell-Mikaelsen block. Tied at 21, kills from Barhorst and Dull gave Ohio State a 23-21 lead. An OSU error made it 23-22. A Badger error gave OSU set point at 24-22. A Walch kill stopped the set point at 24-23. The Buckeyes, with a Szerszen kill, won the set, 25-23, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. OSU hit .265 for the set to .238 for Wisconsin.
Tied at one in the fourth set, kills from Mikaelsen and Wack gave Wisconsin a 3-1 lead. The Badgers built a 20-13 lead before Ohio State scored seven consecutive points. The run began with kills from Booth and Dull and a Badger error to make it 20-16. A Wisconsin error and blocks from Schwarzwalder and Dull and Danks and Schwarzwalder made it 20-19. A Dull kill tied the set at 20. An OSU error, a Mikaelsen ace serve and a Wack kill gave Wisconsin a 23-20 lead. Mikaelsen, with an ace serve made it set point at 24-21. OSU stopped two set points with a Schwarzwalder-Betsy Hone block and a Schwarzwalder kill to make it 24-23. The Badgers won the set, 25-23, with a Gabrielsen kill to tie the match at two games each. Ohio State hit .379 for the set to .265 for Wisconsin.
The fifth set had four lead changes and seven ties. At one-all, a Dull kill and a Badger error gave OSU a 3-1 lead. Trailing, 5-2, a Walch kill and two aces from Wack gave Wisconsin a 6-5 lead. Two Szerszen kills gave OSU a 7-6 lead. An OSU error tied the set at seven. Wisconsin, with a Walch kill, took an 8-7 lead. Szerszen tied the set at eight with a kill. Another Walch kill gave the Badgers a 9-8 lead. Szerszen, with a kill, tied the set at nine. Walch gave Wisconsin a 10-9 lead with a kill. OSU tied the set at 10 with a Booth-Dull block. Two Wisconsin errors gave Ohio State a 12-10 lead. A Schwarzwalder kill made it 13-10. A Danks-Schwarzwalder block gave Ohio State match point at 14-10. Wisconsin stopped the match point at 14-11 with a kill from Mikaelsen. Ohio State, with a Dull kill, won the set, 15-11, to capture the match 3-2. The Buckeyes hit .333 for the set to .077 for Wisconsin.
For the match, Ohio State hit .268 to .195 for Wisconsin. The Badgers had a 64-58 advantage in kills and a 62-51 margin in assists. Gabrielsen recorded a match-high 47 assists with OSU’s Hone recording 43. The Badgers had six ace serves in the match to three for Ohio State. Wisconsin’s Wack and Mikaelsen and OSU’s Mignin each served a match-high two aces. The Buckeyes gave up eight service errors to seven for Wisconsin. Defensively, the Badgers had a 65-64 margin in digs. Wisconsin’s Kim Kuzma recorded a match-high 20 digs with OSU’s Mignin collecting a team-high 16. The Buckeyes had a 14-9 advantage in team blocks. Schwarzwalder posted a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists for OSU with Danks adding six assists blocks. Gabrielsen had a team-high five blocks with a solo and four assists for the Badgers.
Ohio State continues Big Ten Conference play at 7 p.m. CT at fifth-ranked Illinois (9-2, 1-0) Saturday.
