LAST TIME OUT
Following a record-setting victory at the Marshall Invitational, the first win under second-year head coach Donnie Darr, Ohio State squared off against a difficult field at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 17-19. Participants included 2010 NCAA team champion Augusta State, runner-up Oklahoma State, semifinalist Florida State and NCAA qualifiers Arizona State, California, Duke, Florida, Illinois and Stanford.
The Scarlet and Gray had team scores of 282-289-294 to finish in seventh place at the par 70, 7,205-yard North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club. Leading the way for Ohio State was senior Bo Hoag, who tied for 11th at 3-over. Hoag was followed closely by fellow-senior Brad Smith who tied for 16th at 4-over. Juniors Alex Redfield and Dan Charen finished in 41st and 45th at 11-over and 12-over, respectively. Sophomore Jamie Sindelar tied for 68th at 18-over.
AIM LOW
With just two tournaments completed during the 2010 fall campaign, Ohio State has already eclipsed the number of rounds in the 60s from the 2009-10 season. Last year, the Buckeyes carded a total of 11 rounds in the 60s in 10 stroke-play tournaments. In just two events this season, the Scarlet and Gray have posted 13 rounds in the 60s and have also notched one tournament title at the Marshall Invitational.
SCOUNTING THE FIELD
The field at the Windon Memorial will be marked by a host of Big Ten foes, with seven of the 17 teams coming from that conference. Of those seven teams, Ohio State recently squared off against Illinois, Purdue, Indiana and Northwestern at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. The Buckeyes were the highest ranking of any of the five Big Ten schools competing.
All told, the Windon Memorial will play host to teams from a total of 10 conferences including: Pac-10, Big South, Sun Belt, Big Ten, MAC, Big West, Big East, Ivy League, Conference USA and SEC.
GRASPING THE GREENS
The Windon Memorial Classic will be held at the North Shore Country Club. North Shore had homes in several areas around Chicago before finding a permanent home in the suburban city of Glenview. Located just north of Chicago, North Shore was originally designed by the esteemed British golf course architecture firm of Colt, MacKenzie, and Allison.
Minor changes have occurred since its inception in the early 20th century, but North Shore recently underwent an improvement project that focused on improving the infrastructure and function of the course, while still remaining true to the original course architect’s design elements. The result is a course that will continually provide challenges for all golfers.
Measuring 7,067 yards from the championship tees, North Shore forces golfers to combine accuracy with distance to be successful. Nearly every hole is flanked with a bevy of bunkers and water hazards that will test every skill and club in a player’s arsenal and leave many with difficult decisions throughout their round.
OSU Q SCHOOL
Ohio State held its annual fall qualifying tournament Sept. 7-10 that consisted of five rounds over four days. Jamie Sindelar took the top spot with a score of 6-under 349 after closing with a 3-under 68, adding to his rounds of 70-72-67-72 during the week.
Runner-up was junior Dan Charen at 2-under and also concluded the week with a solid round of 69. Matching his final round score was senior Bo Hoag who took third at 1-over.Rounding out the top 5 were senior Brad Smith at 11-over and junior Alex Redfield at 12-over. Redfield capped off his impressive rebound – after opening qualifying with a 79, he was only 4-over through his next four rounds.
THE NEW GUY
Ryan Potter joined the Ohio State men’s golf team Aug. 5 as an assistant coach. He came to the Buckeyes after two years as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi and a year as a volunteer coach at the University of Alabama. He is a second generation golf coach as the son of Alabama women’s golf coach Mic Potter.
A four-year letterwinner at Furman University, Potter graduated with a degree in history and received his masters in sports management from Alabama in May 2008.
UP NEXT
Following the Windon Memorial Classic, Ohio State will get some rest before hosting a challenging field at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at the Scioto Country Club Oct. 11-12 in Columbus.
