WVB: Buckeyes Sweep Presbyterian at the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (10-1 overall) began play at the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Presbyterian (4-6) Friday afternoon. Ohio State’s Marian Booth recorded a career-high 14.5 points with career-highs of nine kills (.438) and 11 assist blocks. Anna Szerszen contributed 12.5 points with eight kills (.182), one ace serve, one solo block and five assist blocks while Katie Dull added 11 points with 10 kills (.667) and two assist blocks. Blue Hose Lisa Shelley recorded a team-high eight points for Presbyterian with six kill and two ace serves.
Tied at three in set one, two Szerszen kills, one from Emily Danks and an Amanda Peterson-Allie Schwarzwalder block to take a 7-3 lead. After a Buckeye error (7-4), OSU expanded the lead to seven at 11-4, with kills from Peterson and Dull, a Szerszen ace serve and a Dull-Schwarzwalder block. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching set point at 24-19 with a kill from Dull. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with a Banks-Booth block. The Buckeyes hit .407 for the set to .179 for Presbyterian.
Presbyterian opened the second set with the first five points starting with two kills from Haley Thurmond, one from Andrea Barman and two Carolyn Fabros ace serves. The Buckeyes scored the next 12 points starting with a Presbyterian error, two blocks from Booth and Danks and one from Booth and Szerszen. A Booth kill tied the set at five and a Blue Hose error gave OSU a 6-5 lead. The run continued with a Booth kill, a Presbyterian error and four assist blocks from Szerszen and Booth to give Ohio State a 12-5 error. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching set point at 24-15 with a kill from Dull. A Barman kill stopped the set point at 24-16. A solo block from Szerszen ended the set at 25-16 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .226 in the set to -.206 for Presbyterian.
In the third set, the Blue Hose broke a 1-1 tie with a Buckeye error and two Amanda Kettles ace serves for a 4-1 lead. Trailing, 8-4, a kill and solo block from Peterson, a Booth-Dull block and another Peterson kill tied the set at eight. Tied at 11, two Presley Mabrey kills and an OSU error gave the Blue Hose a 14-11 lead. A Szerszen kill and a Presbyterian error cut the lead to 14-13. An OSU error made it 15-13. The Buckeyes tied the set at 15 with a kill from Schwarzwalder and a Peterson-Schwarzwalder block. After four ties, the score was 19-all. Back-to-back kills from Dull gave Ohio State a 21-19 lead. A Peterson ace serve and a Dull kill made it 23-19. An OSU error made it 23-20. A Booth-Danks block gave Ohio State match point at 24-20. Ohio State won the set, 25-20, with a Booth kill to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .417 for the set to -.043 for Presbyterian.
Ohio State hit .341 for the match, holding the Blue Hose to a -.035. The Buckeyes had a 38-25 advantage in kills and a 35-24 margin in assists. Kilee Ruppe posted a match-high 22 kills for Presbyterian with OSU’s Peterson recording a team-high 20 assists off the bench. The Blue Hose recorded a match-high eight ace serves to four for OSU. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to four for Presbyterian. Fabros recorded a match-high three aces for Presbyterian with OSU’s Peterson serving a match-high two. Defensively, the Blue Hose had a 32-28 edge in digs with Ashley Dunlap recording a match-high nine. OSU’s Sarah Mignin collected a team-high eight digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, Ohio State had a 17-2 advantage in team blocks. Booth posted a match-high and career-best 11 assist blocks for the Buckeyes.
Tournament play for Ohio State continues at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Buckeyes facing Coastal Carolina and at 7 p.m. playing host Kennesaw State.
