COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team (9-1 overall) travels to Kennesaw, Ga., for its third of four consecutive road trips this month. The Buckeyes will play three matches at the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational. The Buckeyes will face Presbyterian (4-4) at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 in their first match. Saturday, at 10 a.m., OSU will face Coastal Carolina (5-5) and close out the invitational at 7 p.m. against host Kennesaw State (4-6).
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The 25th-ranked Buckeyes (9-1 overall) won the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament last weekend with 3-0 wins over Brown, UMBC and Towson and a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart.
For the season, Katie Dull is averaging a team-high 4.31 kills per set. Emily Danks ranks second at 3.60 with Anna Szerszen at 2.80. Barhorst is hitting a team-high .377 with Danks at .324 and Allie Schwarzwalder at .289. At setter, Betsy Hone is averaging 10.23 assists per set. In aces per set, Danks leads the team with a 1.03 per set average with 35. Sarah Mignin ranks second at .38 with 13 and Dull is third at .29 with 10. Defensively, Mignin is averaging a team-high 2.94 digs per set. Dull ranks second at 2.03 with Hone third at 1.35. Mignin is the team leader in serve reception percentage at .980 handling 251 of 256 attempts. Susan Halverson ranks second at .940 (126 of 134) and Davionna DiSalvatore is third at .930 (133 of 143). At the net, Allie Schwarzwalder is averaging 1.68 blocks per set to lead the team with seven solos and 35 assists. Mariah Booth ranks second at 1.08 with three solos and 25 assists with Dull third at .71 with five solos and 19 assists.
Ohio State is averaging 13.32 kills and 11.91 assists per set while hitting .280. The Buckeyes average 2.50 aces, 3.01 blocks and 10.82 digs per set average. A LOOK AT PRESBYTERIAN
The Blue Hose are 4-4 on the season prior to their Wednesday match at Western Carolina. Last weekend at the CEFCU Classic at Valpariso, Presbyterian lost to Valpariso, 3-0, and defeated Bradley, 3-1 and Hofstra, 3-0.
Leading the Blue Hose in kills per set is Lisa Shelley with a 3.45 average. Presley Mabrey ranks second at 3.41 with Amanda Kettles third at 3.03. Kettles has a team-high .322 attack percentage with Shelley ranked second at .210 and Mabrey third at .125. At setter, Kilee Ruppe is averaging 9.86 assists per set. Kettles leads the team in aces per set at .45 with 13. Shelley ranks second at .28 with eight and Carolyn Fabros third at .24 with seven. Ashley Dunlap has a team-high 3.66 digs per set average. Ruppe ranks second at 2.21 with Shelley third at 2.00. At the net averaging .76 blocks per set, Kettles has 10 solos and 12 assist blocks. A LOOK AT COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers are 5-5 on the season having won their last five matches including three at the Comfort Suites Coastal Carolina Invitational. They defeated The Citadel and Norfolk State, 3-0 and USC Upstate, 3-2. From statistics from last weekend, Mindy Quimby and Kelsie Queen are averaging a team-high 2.46 kills per set with Cori Harris third at 2.23. At setter, Emily Sanders is averaging 9.62 assists per set for the Chanticleers. Quimby is averaging a team-high .38 aces per set with five and Morgan Page is second at .15 with two. Defensively, Megan Healey has a team-high 3.92 digs per set average. Sanders ranks second at 3.38 with Quinby third at 2.46. The Owls are 4-6 on the season after winning two of three matches at the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldog Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C. Kennesaw State lost 3-0 to Weber State and defeated Wolford and Gardner-Webb, 3-0 at the Classic.
Sabrita Gulley has a team-high 4.09 kills per set for the Owls. Ranking second is Alyssa Lang at 3.52 with Baylee Strachan third at 1.48. Gulley leads the team in attack percentage at .300. DULL EARNS MVP HONORS LAST WEEK
Katie Dull was named the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading Ohio State to the tournament championship. In the four matches, she averaged 4.42 points, 3.23 kills, .54 aces, 1.23 digs and 1.15 blocks per set. Dull had eight kills, three ace serves and two blocks against Brown and ended her streak of 37 matches with double-figure kills. She had 11 kills, one ace and two blocks against UMBC. She had a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs against Sacred Heart and added six assist blocks. She closed out the weekend with eight kills, three ace serves, four digs and five assist blocks against Towson. For the season, Dull is averaging team highs of 4.31 points and 3.59 kills per set. She is averaging .29 aces, 2.03 digs and .71 blocks per set.
SCHWARZWALDER BLOCKS HER WAY TO ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
Allie Schwarzwalder averaged 2.08 blocks per set in the four matches last weekend and was named to the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament All-Tournament Team. She averaged 3.65 points, 2.15 kills .38 aces and .69 digs per set for the weekend. Schwarzwalder began the weekend with eight kills and four assist blocks against Brown. She had five kills, four assist blocks and four digs at UMBC. Against Sacred Heat, Schwarzwalder earned her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 total blocks. The 10 total blocks, including nine assist blocks, were both career highs. She added five kills, a career-high four ace serves and nine (1-8) total blocks in the Towson match. For the season, Schwarzwalder is averaging 2.78 points, 1.60 kills, .20 aces, .68 digs and a team-high 1.68 blocks per set that ranks fourth nationally. For her weekend play, she was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
DANKS POSTS A CAREER-HIGH SIX ASSIST BLOCKS AGAINST SACRED HEART – LEADS THE COUNTRY IN ACES PER SET
Emily Danks recorded a career-high six assist blocks in the Sacred Heart match last weekend. She added seven kills, one ace serve and three digs in the match. She began the weekend with three kills, three ace serves and two assist blocks against Brown. Danks recorded four kills, five ace serves and six digs in the UMBC match. She posted a match-high 10 kills against Towson, adding an ace serve, four digs and four assist blocks. Danks, for the season, is averaging 3.60 points, 2.21 kills, a team-high 1.03 aces, .85 digs and .68 blocks per set. She has recorded at least one ace in every match this season and three or more in seven matches. Danks ranks first nationally in ace per set at 1.03.
SZERSZEN HAS A SEASON-HIGH FIVE BLOCKS AGAINST SACRED HEART
Anna Szerszen recorded two solos and three assist blocks against Sacred Heart to post a season-high five blocks in the match. She added eight kills, one ace serve and three digs in the contest. Szerszen began the weekend with three kills and five digs against Brown. She had five kills, three digs and an ace serve at UMBC. She posted seven kills, one ace serve and a solo block against Towson. For the season, Szerszen is averaging 2.80 points, 2.18 kills, .27 aces, .82 digs and .58 blocks per set.
BOOTH RECORDS A CAREER-HIGH NINE TOTAL BLOCKS AGAINST SACRED HEART
Mariah Booth, recorded a career-high nine total blocks against Sacred Heart with a solo and a career-high eight assist blocks. She added four kills in the match. Booth had a kill and an ace serve against Brown and six kills, a career-high two solo blocks and an assist block against UMBC. She recorded four kills and three assist blocks against Towson. Booth has played in nine matches this season with seven starts. She is averaging 1.75 points, 1.12 kills and 1.08 blocks per set.
HONE EQUALS HER SEASON HIGH OF THREE ASSIST BLOCKS AGAINST TOWSON
Betsy Hone recorded three assist blocks against Towson to equal her season high set against South Florida. She added 30 assists, three kills and two digs in the match. Hone had 20 assists, four kills, three digs, two assist blocks and an ace serve against Brown and recorded six assists, three kills and two assist blocks in limited action at UMBC. She came off the bench against Sacred Heart to record 27 assists, one kill, two digs and one assist block. Hone has played in all 10 matches with nine starts. On the season, she is averaging 10.23 assists, 1.71 points, 1.23 kills, .19 aces, 1.35 digs and .52 blocks per set.
BARHORST HAS 10 KILLS AGAINST BROWN
Kelli Barhorst had 10 kills against Brown for her third double-figure match of the season. She added one assist block in the match while hitting .600 (10-1-15). Barhorst saw limited action in the UMBC match and did not play against Sacred Heart or Towson. She has played and started eight matches this season and is averaging 3.10 points, 2.48 kills, .52 digs, .64 blocks and .20 aces per set.
PEDERSON HAS EXTENDED PLAY AGAINST UMBC
Amanda Pederson came off the bench at UMBC to record season highs of 21 assists, six kills, four digs and three (1-2) total blocks. She played against Brown recording one dig. Peterson had the start against Sacred Heart, recording 12 assists, one dig and two assist blocks. She did not play against Towson. On the season, Peterson has played in four matches with one start. She is averaging 2.00 points, 1.20 kills, .20 aces, 1.20 digs and 1.00 blocks per set.
MIGNIN HAS FIFTH DOUBLE-FIGURE DIG MATCH AGAINST SACRED HEART
Libero Sarah Mignin posted a team-high 15 digs against Sacred Heart for her fifth double-figure match of the season. The 15 digs were one off her career high of 16 set against VCU earlier this season. She added three ace serves and handled 37 serve receptions without an error in the match. Mignin had four digs, four assists and handled 11 serve receptions without an error against Brown and four digs, three assists and handled 21 of 22 serve receptions at UMBC. In the Towson match, she had seven kills, three ace serves and handled 25 serve receptions without an error and recorded her first career kill. Mignin has started all 10 matches at libero this season and is averaging a team-high 2.94 digs per set. She is second on the squad in aces per set at .38 with 13 and has a team best .980 serve reception attempts handling 251 of 256 attempts.
HALVERSON COLLECTS A SEASON-HIGH SEVEN DIGS AGAINST BROWN
Susan Halverson recorded a season-high seven digs and handled 16 serve receptions without an error in the Brown match. She had two assists and handled nine serve receptions without an error in the UMBC match. Halverson posted four digs, one assist and handled 13 of 14 serve receptions against Sacred Heart. She recorded two digs, one assist and handled seven of eight serve receptions against Towson. On the season, Halverson has played in all 10 matches and is averaging .74 digs. She has handled 126 of 134 serve receptions for a .940 percentage.
DISALVATORE SEES ACTION AS A BACK ROW STARTER
Davionna DiSalvatore was a back row starter in all four matches last weekend. She had two digs, an assist and handled 11 of 12 serve receptions without an error against Brown and four digs, an assist and handled seven of eight serve receptions without an error at UMBC. Against Sacred Heart, DiSalvatore had five digs, handled 15 of 17 serve receptions and recorded her first career kill in the match. She had one assist and handled eight of nine serve receptions in the Towson match. DiSalvatore has played in all 10 matches this season with seven starts. She is averaging 1.03 digs per set on the season and has a .930 serve reception percentage handling 133 of 143 attempts.
LEARY POSTS CAREER HIGHS AGAINST BROWN
Kaitlyn Leary recorded career highs of four kills, two digs and four points in limited action in the Brown match. She also saw limited action against Towson. Leary has played in six matches this season and is averaging 1.00 points, .86 kills, .57 digs and .14 blocks per set.
ALLIE SCHWARZWALDER NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 13, 2010
Allie Schwarzwalder has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the four Buckeye victories at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament last weekend. She was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.08 blocks per set in the tournament.
Schwarzwalder had eight kills, four assist blocks and one dig in the 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) win over Brown. She had five kills, four digs and four assist blocks in the 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) victory at UMBC. Schwarzwalder produced her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 total blocks in the 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) win over Sacred Heart. She added thee digs and an ace serve in the match and her 10 total blocks and nine assist blocks were career highs. In the final match of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14) win over Towson, Schwarzwalder had five kills, a career-high four ace serves, one dig and nine total blocks with a solo and eight assists.
For the weekend, Schwarzwalder averaged 3.65 points, 2.08 blocks, 2.15 kills, .38 aces and .69 digs per set.
OHIO STATE RANKED 25TH IN THE AVCA POLL
In the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll, Ohio State received 74 votes and is ranked 25th in Division I. It marks the first time the Buckeyes have been ranked in the Top 25 since September of 2007. Four Big Ten squads are ranked in the Top 25 with Penn State second, Illinois fifth, Minnesota 12th and Michigan ranked 21st.
BUCKEYES HAVE THREE BIG TEN NETWORK APPEARANCES
The Big Ten Network will have three Ohio State matches shown live this season. Buckeye home matches against Minnesota (Oct. 16, 6 p.m.) and Penn State (Oct 20, 7 p.m.) and OSU’s road match at Michigan (Nov. 6, 6 p.m.) are part of the conference broadcast schedule.
BIG TEN COACHES PICK OHIO STATE TO FINISH FOURTH
By a vote of the Big Ten coaches, Ohio State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2010 season. The Buckeyes finished tied for fourth last season. Six-time defending champion Penn State was picked to finish first, Illinois season and Minnesota third. Rounding out the top six is Michigan fifth and Michigan State sixth.
KATIE DULL IS NAMED TO THE 2010 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Senior outside hitter Katie Dull was a unanimous selection to the 2010 preseason All-Big Ten team by a vote of the Big Ten coaches. Joining Dull on the team is Johannah Bangert, Michelle Bartsch, Laura DeBruler and Hillary Haen of Illinois; Ashley Benson of Indiana; Alex Hunt and Lexi Zimmerman of Michigan; Kyndra Abron of Michigan State; Lauren Gibbemeyer, Tabitha Love and Hailey Cowles of Minnesota; Sabel Moffett of Northwestern and Blair Brown, Alyssa D’Errico and Arielle Wilson of Penn State.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his third season at Ohio State. He directed the Buckeyes to a fourth place tie (12-8) in the Big Ten in 2009 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship finishing with a 25-10 overall record.
Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 239-95.
