Brandon Wynn tabbed MVP, Justin Myers receives second-consecutive Coaches’ Award
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Miles Avery, 13th-year Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, and his staff awarded seven 2010 team honors at its year-end banquet last Friday at the OSU Golf Course.
In addition to the laurels, the Buckeyes’ four seniors in Michael Bell, Tai Lee, Justin Myers and Shachar Tal were recognized for their dedication to the program.
The 2010 season was highlighted as junior captain and the team’s Most Valuable Player Brandon Wynn won the NCAA title on rings to earn his second All-America honor. A year after receiving the team’s Most Improved honor, Wynn went undefeated on rings while also leading the team in the all-around.
Senior captain Justin Myers again nabbed the Coaches’ Award in 2010 for his continual hard work and leadership. After joining the team as a walk-on in 2007, Myers won a spot on the competition squad each of his four seasons and eventually earned an athletic scholarship.
Myers and Wynn also were recognized for their work as captains of the 2010 squad.
The Most Improved laurel went to sophomore Matt Rayl who earned a spot on the pommel horse squad this season. The Carmel, Ind., native scored above a 14.4 at four of the last five regular-season meets, including a career-best 14.7 against Penn State Feb. 27. Rayl has placed second on the event twice and third once this season.
The team’s upperclassman scholar-athlete honor was given to Michael Bell, who will start graduate school at Stanford in the fall, for a third-consecutive year while freshman Michael Newburger received his first team honor as the underclassman recipient.
