Ohio State Ties for 10th at FAU Spring Break Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

Cress, Smith and Wright each shoot final round under par
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team concluded the FAU Spring Break Championship in a tie for 10th place with a total of 884 (+32) Sunday in Delray Beach, Fla. Three Buckeyes shot a final round of 1-under 70 and the team posted a third-round score of 293 at the par 71, 6,722-yard Gleneagles Country Club.
Tenth-ranked Illinois ran away with the team title with a score of 10-under 842, good for an 18-stroke victory over conference foe Iowa. Penn State finished third as the 16-team field featured seven squads from the Big Ten.
The top Ohio State finisher was senior Brad Wright, who was one of five Buckeyes competing as an individual. The Cambridge, Ohio, native fired his second round of 70 in the tournament, a steady round with three birdies to two bogeys while making par on 13 holes. Wright tied for 13th at 2-over 215.
Brad Smith wrapped up the tournament with a bang, with birdies on his final three holes for a round of 70. Starting on the 10th tee, the junior from Peru, Ind., had a solid round with his only blemishes coming in a three-hole bogey streak on Nos. 12-14. He was then 4-under through his final 13 holes. Smith tied for 17th with a total of 216.
Also with a steady final round of 70 was fellow junior Michael Cress. The Dublin, Ohio, native had two bogeys in is opening nine holes, but made no mistakes in his last nine with birdies on Nos. 1, 4 and 8. He finished tied for 39th at 10-over 223.
After turning in a 68 in the second round, freshman Zack Sobel had a tough final round of 76. The Clearwater, Fla., product started with a bogey and double-bogey on his first two holes and followed with another bogey on No. 13. He birdied two of his next seven holes to get to 2-over, but tacked on three more bogeys in his last four holes. Sobel also totaled 216 to tie for 17th with Smith.
Rounding out the Buckeye lineup were freshman Matthew Turner with a 77 and Bo Hoag with his third-consecutive round of 78. Both tied for 80th with totals of 234.
Along with Wright, Ohio State’s individual competitors included sophomore Dan Charen (T-45th, 224), senior Patrick Simard (63rd, 227), sophomore Alex Redfield (T-84th, 236) and redshirt-freshman Jamie Sindelar (T-84th, 236).
Up next, the Buckeyes face a quick turnaround traveling down to Kannapolis, N.C., to compete in the Irish Creek Collegiate Classic April 3-4.
