Ohio State Begins Play at FAU Spring Break Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

Brad Wright and Zack Sobel stand in top 15 with 36 holes to play
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team got off to a rough start at the FAU Spring Break Championships with a team score of 302 (+18) Friday in Delray Beach, Fla. The Buckeyes are in 15th place while competing on the par 71, 6,722-yard Gleneagles Country Club.
Standing atop the leaderboard by six strokes is 10th-ranked Illinois at 2-under 282. Doug Fortner of Notre Dame leads the individual standings after a blistering opening round of 7-under 64.
Leading the way for Ohio State was freshman Zack Sobel with a 72 to tie for 15th. The Clearwater, Fla., native stumbled on his second hole with a double-bogey, but battled back with birdies on Nos. 4 and 7 to return to even par. After the turn, he remained even until a bogey on 17 to finish 1-over.
Junior Brad Smith began his round on a high note with a birdie on his opening hole and followed with a relatively steady round in which he made par on 13 holes while posting four bogeys. He is tied for 33rd with a 74.
Fellow juniors Bo Hoag and Michael Cress each opened with a round of 78 to tie for 68th. Hoag was sitting at 3-over until he double-bogeyed two of his last three holes. Cress made par on 12 holes with five bogeys and a double-bogey.
Rounding out the OSU lineup was freshman Matt Turner with an 83 to tie for 90th.
Five Buckeyes also are competing as individuals with senior Brad Wright leading the group with a round of 71. The Cambridge, Ohio, native was 1-over at the turn then returned to even-par with a birdie on No. 5. After a bogey on the next hole, Wright had an eagle on the par 5 No. 3 to move to under par where he held for the last two holes.
Also playing as individuals are senior Patrick Simard (t-25th, 73), sophomore Dan Charen (t-60th, 77), redshirt-freshman Jamie Sindelar (t-82nd, 81) and sophomore Alex Redfield (t-86th, 82).
The FAU Spring Break Championship continues with single rounds Saturday and Sunday. Tee times begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with live scoring available on www.golfstat.com.
