OHIO STATE POSTMATCH QUOTES VS. LIPSCOMB
Would you like to tell us what this win means to your program?
Head Coach Geoff Carlston: “We know Lipscomb from last year. I thought it was nothing really shocking. They are a really well-coached team and in the locker room after game two we talked about how they would make adjustments, and they did, they played awesome defense. They really picked up the defense and tipping and just really high IQ stuff. We kind of righted the ship in the fourth set. It was just a really good match and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
Because you had seen Lipscomb before, what did you expect after the second set knowing what they could do?
Head Coach Geoff Carlston: “It’s kind of when you win a game 25-8 and everything is going right and then we served the ball in the net a lot in the third set. We knew they were a very good defensive team and very scrappy. We also knew that it is tough to sustain the pace we had in the first and second sets. Momentum is big in this sport and their players are just smart, we knew that; they hit great shots. They just started playing better and we really kind of platitude a little bit. We didn’t meet their energy and we started serving the ball in the net and really it’s a tribute to them just playing good defense in game three so, hats off to them for sure.
They didn’t block anything in the first two; talk a little bit about what they did differently because it seemed like they got their hands on a lot more.
Katie Dull: “You’re right, they weren’t touching our blocks and I think that kind of lulled us into expecting our shots to be there and we didn’t have very closed blocks. They really started being disciplined in the third game and started closing the blocks. They were solid across the net and we were lulled into a sense of security and they came back at us and proved that you can’t ever do that when you play volleyball.”
Being seniors, what was your kind of motivation to put this one away?
Katie Dull: “Lipscomb is a great team and that’s the kind of team you don’t want to go five with because they are very high-energy, they are scrappy and they had the momentum on their side in the third and fourth game. Whenever you go to a game five it can go either way and obviously as seniors we want to go out on a good note. We want to go as far as we can in the tournament and finish our season and our careers on a good note.”
You have more of a tournament history with Dayton, at this point does it really matter who you play? Do you play your game no matter who you play?
Coach Geoff Carlston: “It was such an intense match we are going to decompress a little bit, get some food and watch some of the Butler – UD match. Dayton obviously is supposed to win the match but it doesn’t always mean they’re going to, that’s why you play the match. We’ll go and get some food and watch some of it so they get a taste of it, but the coaches will stay and we’ll let them get some rest. It’s our finals week so kids are freaking out and they need to go back and study a little bit because I know my team well enough that if they’re freaking out they don’t play very good volleyball. I want them to go home, rest, read a little bit and wake up in the morning really focused on Saturday’s match. We’re excited and we are going to sleep well and get after it tomorrow morning.”
I know you’re going to relax a little bit, but are you really going to go home and study?
Katie Dull: We’ll savor the win and focus on tomorrow and Sunday will be a crunch time.
