Buckeyes Drop 3-1 Decision to Third-seeded Stanford in NCAA Dayton Regional Semifinal – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (24-12 overall) closed out the 2010 season with a 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18) loss to third-seeded Stanford (27-3) at the NCAA Regional Semifinal match of the Dayton Regional at the University of Dayton Arena. OSU’s Katie Dull posted a team-high 21.5 points for the Buckeyes with 21 kills (.386) and one assist block. Teammate Anna Szerszen added 11 points with 11 kills (.273). Stanford’s Alix Klineman recorded a match-high 32.5 points for the Cardinal with 29 kills (.480), three ace serves and one assist block. Jessica Walker added 14 points with 11 kills (.500), two solo and two assist blocks.
The first set of the match saw 10 ties and six lead changes. At 18-all, a Carly Wopat kill and a Walker solo block gave Stanford a 20-18 lead. After an OSU time out, kills from Dull and Klineman made it 21-19 Cardinal. A kill from Emily Danks cut the lead to one at 21-20. Stanford responded with a Cassidy Lichtman kill and an ace serve from Klineman to take a 23-20 Cardinal lead. A Stanford error made it 23-21. A Buckeye error gave the Cardinal set point at 24-21. Stanford won the set, 25-21, off an OSU error to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .458 in the set to .379 for the Cardinal.
Set two, like set one, was a battle that saw 14 ties and six lead changes. Stanford broke an 18-all tie off an OSU error and a kill from Klineman to open a 20-18 lead. Kills from Dull and Klineman made it 21-19. The score moved to 22-20 with kills from Danks and Walker. A kill from Dull and a Cardinal error tied the set at 22 forcing a Stanford time out. Ohio State took a 23-22 lead with a kill from Szerszen as Stanford called another time out. A Kelli Barhorst-Betsy Hone block gave OSU set point at 24-22. An OSU error made it 24-23 Buckeyes. Stanford tied the set at 24 with a Walker-Rachel Williams block. A kill from Barhorst made it 25-24 with OSU serving a third set point. Ohio State won the set, 26-24, off a Cardinal error to tie the match at one set each. The Buckeyes hit .342 to .214 for Stanford.
The squads exchanged points early in the third set. Tied at seven, kills from Szerszen and Dull gave Ohio State a 9-7 lead. At 10-8, two kills from Klineman tied the set at 10. At 11-all, a Barhorst-Hone block and a kill from Hone gave the Buckeyes a 13-11 lead. Two OSU errors tied the set at 13. A kill from Williams and an ace serve from Klineman gave Stanford a 15-13 lead. At 17-15, a Hone kill cut the lead to one at 17-16. Stanford, with an OSU error, a Klineman kill, a Hannah Benjamin ace serve and another Klineman kill opened a 21-16 lead. An Allie Schwarzwalder-Danks block made it 21-17. A Klineman kill and a Buckeye error made it 23-17. A kill from Dull and a Barhorst-Dull block cut the lead to four at 23-19. A Walker kill made set point at 24-19. Stanford won the set, 25-19, off an OSU error to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Cardinal hit .342 for the set to .289 for OSU.
The fourth set opened with kills from Klineman and Danks for a 1-1 tie. A Wopat-Klineman block, a Hayley Spelman kill, a Wopat ace serve and another Klineman block gave Stanford a 5-1 lead. Two kills from Klineman, a Cardinal error and a Dull kill moved the score to 7-3. A Szerszen kill, a Cardinal error and a kill from Dull cut the Stanford lead to one at 7-6. At 8-7, two OSU errors and kills from Klineman and Wopat gave Stanford a 12-7 lead. Trailing, 18-13, OSU cut the margin to three (18-15) off a Cardinal error and a Szerszen kill. Stanford took the lead to five (20-15) with kill from Walker and Williams. A Lichtman-Walker block made it 21-15. A Hone kill and a Hone-Schwarzwalder block made it 21-17 as Stanford called time out. Kills from Walker and Dull made it 22-18. Williams, with two kills, made it match point at 24-18. The Cardinal won the set, 25-18, with a Klineman kill to win the match, 3-1. Stanford hit .351 for the set to .219 for Ohio State.
For the match, Ohio State hit .318 to .315 for the Cardinal. Stanford had a 66-55 advantage in kills and a 58-53 margin in assists. OSU’s Hone posted a match-high 42 while Lichtman had a team-high 27 and Karissa Cook added 26 for the Cardinal. Stanford had a 9-1 margin in ace serves with Klineman recording a match-high three. OSU gave up eight service errors to seven for the Cardinal. Defensively, Ohio State had a 56-54 edge in digs with OSU’s Sarah Mignin posting a match-high 17. Benjamin and Gabi Ailes each recorded a team-high 11 for Stanford. At the net, the Buckeyes had an 8-6 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Barhorst posted a match-high five assist blocks for the Buckeyes.
