WVB: Buckeyes Drop 3-1 Decision at Indiana – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (14-4 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) suffered a 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-20, 25-20) loss at Indiana (13-4, 1-4) Friday night in University Gym. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a match-high 21 points in the loss with Anna Szerszen adding 12. Dull had 19 kills and two ace serves with Szerszen posting eight kills, two ace serves, a solo block and two assist blocks. Indiana’s Jordan Haverly recorded a team-high 14.5 points with 14 kills and an assist block with Kelci Marschall adding 12 points with 10 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks.
Indiana opened set one with a five-point run starting with an OSU error and a Marschall solo block. A Taylor Wittmer kill, a Buckeye error and a Whitney Granado ace serve made it 5-0 Indiana. Trailing, 11-5, three Indiana errors and kills from Szerszen and Dull cut the Hoosier lead to one at 11-10. At 13-12, Indiana used an OSU error, a Marschall-Wittmer block and kills from Wittmer, Haverly and Marschall to open an 18-12 lead. The Hoosiers held the lead reaching set point at 24-20 off an OSU error. A Dull kill stopped a set point at 24-21. Indiana, with a kill from Marschall, won the set, 25-21, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Hoosiers hit .156 for the set to .081 for Ohio State.
Set two, tied at three, saw the Buckeyes score the next six points to take a 9-3 lead. The run began with a Schwarzwalder kill, an Amanda Peterson ace serve and kills from Szerszen and Schwarzwalder. Leading, 7-3, a kill from Danks and a Hoosier error gave OSU a six-point lead. Leading, 13-10, a Peterson-Kelli Barhorst block, a Szerszen solo block, a kill and two ace serves from Dull opened an 18-11 lead. At 20-12, a Allie Schwarzwalder-Szerszen block, two Indiana errors and a Schwarzwalder-Emily Danks block gave OSU set point at 24-12. A Szerszen kill gave OSU a 25-12 set win to tie the match at one. Ohio State hit .360 for the set to -.030 for the Hoosiers.
Indiana broke a two-all tie in set three with a Mary Chaudoin-Wittmer block and kills from Haverly and Wittmer for a 5-2 lead. With OSU trailing, 12-10, kills from Szerszen and Schwarzwalder tied the set at 12. Kills from Haverly and Chaudoin gave Indiana a 14-12 lead. The Hoosiers held the lead reaching set point at 24-19 with an Ashley Benson-Haverly block. A Hoosier error made it 24-20. Indiana won the set, 25-20 with a kill from Benson. The Hoosiers hit .486 for the set to .286 for Ohio State.
Set four had three lead changes and six ties. At eight-all, a Schwarzwalder kill and an ace serve from Szerszen gave OSU a 10-8 lead. At 11-9, kills from Wittmer and Ivie Obeime tied the set at 11. At 14-all, five straight Hoosier points opened a 19-14 lead. The run contained kills from Benson, Wittmer and Haverly, a Benson ace serve, an OSU error. Indiana reached match point at 24-18 with a Marschall kill. OSU, with a Dull kill and a Hoosier error, stopped two match points to cut the lead to 24-20. Indiana, with a Benson kill, won the set, 25-20, to win the match, 3-1. The Hoosiers hit .483 for the set while Ohio State hit .278.
Indiana hit .271 for the match to .241 for Ohio State. The Hoosiers had a 54-53 edge in kills and a 52-48 margin in assists. OSU’s Peterson had a match-high 39 assists while Whitney Granado posted 23 and Chaudoin, 19 for the Hoosiers. The Buckeyes had a 6-2 advantage in ace serves with Dull and Szerszen recording two each for OSU. The Buckeyes gave up seven service errors to six for the Hoosiers. Defensively, each squad posted 51 digs with Caitlin Cox recording a match-high 20 for Indiana. OSU’s Sarah Mignin posted a team-high 14 digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, Ohio State had an 8-7 edge in team blocks. OSU’s Schwarzwalder (one solo and three assists) and IU’s Wittmer (four assists) were co-leaders with four blocks each.
Ohio State continues on the road at 7 p.m. Saturday when they play at Purdue (12-4, 3-2).
