COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (14-3 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) travels this week to Indiana (12-4, 0-4) and Purdue (11-4, 2-2) for Big Ten Conference road matches. The Buckeyes face the Hoosiers of Indiana at 7 p.m. EST Friday, Oct. 8 in University Gym (2,000) and play the Boilermakers of Purdue at 7 p.m. EST Saturday, Oct. 9 in Holloway Gymnasium (2,288). A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Coached by Geoff Carlston, the Buckeyes (14-3 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) split a pair of Big Ten Conference home matches last weekend. The Buckeyes lost to 19th-ranked Michigan, 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19) and defeated Michigan State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18). For the season, Katie Dull is the team leader in points per set with a 4.28 average. Emily Danks ranks second at 3.11 with Anna Szerszen third at 2.87.Dullis averaging a team-high 3.54 kills per set. Kelli Barhorst ranks second at 2.44 with Szerszenthird at 2.34. Kelli Barhorst is hitting a team-high .391 with Allie Schwarzwalder second at .280 and Mariah Booth third at .272. At setter, Betsy Hone is averaging 9.74 assists per set with Amanda Peterson second at 6.69. In aces per set, Danks leads the team with a .76 per set average with 45. Sarah Mignin ranks second at .29 (17) and Dull is third at .27 (16). Defensively, Mignin is averaging a team-high 3.03 digs per set. Dull ranks second at 1.98 with Hone third at 1.56. Mignin is the team leader in serve reception percentage at .962 handling 453 of 471 attempts. Susan Halverson ranks second at .952 (217 of 197) and Davionna DiSalvatore is third at .925 (223 of 241). At the net, Allie Schwarzwalder is averaging 1.40 blocks per set to lead the team with 10 solos and 56 assists. Mariah Booth ranks second at 1.20 with five solos and 50 assists with Dull third at .78 with nine solos and 37 assists.
Ohio State is averaging 18.09 points, 13.10 kills and 11.78 assists per set while hitting .282. The Buckeyes average 1.93 aces, 3.06 blocks and 11.24 digs per set and have a .935 serve reception percentage. A LOOK AT INDIANA
The Hoosiers, coached by Sherry Dunbar, are 12-4 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten. Indiana lost road matches at Iowa, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 17-15) and at 17th-ranked Minnesota, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20). Last week the Hoosiers have lost four straight matches after starting the season 12-0. Ashley Benson has a team-high 4.62 points per set average. Jordan Haverly ranks second at 3.92 with Kelci Marschall third at 2.90. In kills per set, Benson leads the team at 3.70 with Haverly second at 3.26 and Marschall third at 2.55. Benson has a team-high .444 attack percentage while Samantha Thrower ranks second at .304 and Marschall is third at .259. At setter, Mary Chaudoin leads the squad with a 9.84 assists per set average. Whitney Granado ranks second at 6.29. With 25 ace serves, Haverly, leads the squad in aces per set at .44. Melanie Hicks, at .29, ranks second with 13 and Caitlin Cox is third at .25 with 14. Defensively, Cox has a team-high 3.84 digs per set average. Ranking second at 2.19 is Haverly with Caitlin Hansen third at 1.91. Haverly leads the squad with a .977 serve reception percentage handling 336 of 344 attempts. Cox, at .971, ranks second (269 of 277) with Hansen third at .949 (169 of 178). At the net, Benson has a team-high 1.30 blocks per set average with seven solos and 62 assists. Taylor Wittmer, at 1.04, ranks second (5-49) and Marschall is third at .66 (2-35).
Indiana is averaging 17.16 points, 13.19 kills and 12.35 assists per set while hitting .244. The Hoosiers average 1.54 aces, 13.16 digs and 2.42 blocks per set and have a .953 serve reception percentage. Opponents average 13.32 points, 10.79 kills and 10.07 assists per set while hitting .147. The Boilermakers, coached by Dave Shondell, are 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Last week, Purdue lost at 17th-ranked Minnesota, 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21) and won 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-23) at Iowa. The Boilermakers play at fourth-ranked Penn State Friday. Ariel Turner has a team-high 5.26 points per set average. Tiffany Fisher, at 3.39, ranks second with Catherine Rebarchak third at 2.58. Turner leads the squad in kills per set at 4.64. Fisher ranks second at 2.62 with Rebarchak third at 2.21. Fisher is the top hitter on the squad at .357. Rebarchak ranks second at .258 with Katie Griffin third at .236. At setter Jaclyn Hart has a team-high 10.84 assists per set average. Rachel Davis ranks second at 7.67. Blair Bashen, with 11 aces, leads the team in aces per set at .21. DULL LEADS SQUAD IN POINTS AND KILLS
Katie Dull leads Ohio State in points (4.28) and kills (3.54) per set. She posted double-figure points and kills last weekend against Michigan and Michigan State. Dull had 15 kills, two ace serves and a solo block for 18 points against Michigan adding an assist and five digs. She recorded 14 kills, two ace serves, a solo and three assist blocks against Michigan State for 18.5 points adding five digs in the match. Playing in all 17 matches, Dull has 14 starts. She ranks second on the squad in digs at 1.98 per set and is third in aces per set at .27 with 16.
DULL NOW 10TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER KILLS WITH 1,359
Senior Katie Dull, with 29 kills last weekend, now has 1,359 career kills and has moved to 10th on the Ohio State career kills list. She passed Dana Stearns (1997-00) who has 1,331. Dull needs 10 kills to pass No. 9 Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 1,369. Currently Dull is sixth in career kills per set at 3.64, tied for 11th in career solo blocks with 55, 18th in career total blocks with 238 (55-183), 12th in career points with 1,584.5 and eighth in career points per game at 4.25.
BARHORST COLLECTS A SEASON-HIGH NINE BLOCKS AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE
Kelli Barhorst posted a season-high nine total blocks against Michigan State with two solo and seven assist blocks. She added eight kills in the contest, hitting .727 with no errors in 11 swings. Barhorst added an assist and two digs in the match. Against Michigan, she posted 11 kills while hitting .348 and added two digs and three total blocks (1-2). Barhorst has started in the 12 matches she has played in and is averaging 3.10 points, 2.44 kills, .46 digs, .85 blocks and .13 aces per set.
SZERSZEN CONTRIBUTES NINE KILLS AND FIVE DIGS AGAINST MICHIGAN
Anna Szerszen had nine kills and five digs in the Michigan match. She also handled 13 of 15 serve receptions. Szerszen posted six kills against Michigan State. A starter in nine matches, she has played in all 17 and is averaging 2.87 points, 2.34 kills, .22 aces, 1.02 digs and .52 blocks per set.
DANKS CONTINUES STREAK OF ACES
Emily Danks, with one ace serve against Michigan and two against Michigan State continues her streak with at least one ace serve in each match this season. She added three kills, one assist and three assist blocks against Michigan and five kills, one dig and three assist blocks in the Michigan State match. Danks has started all 17 matches this season and is averaging 3.11 points, 1.95 kills, a team-high .76 aces, .69 digs and .75 blocks per set.
SCHWARZWALDER TOPS OSU IN BLOCKS PER SET
Allie Schwarzwalder leads Ohio State in blocks per set for the season with a 1.40 average. She has 10 solos and 56 assist blocks. Schwarzwalder had five kills and three assist blocks in the Michigan match and a kill and a solo block against Michigan State. A starter in 11 matches, she has play in all 17 matches and is averaging 2.49 points, 1.55 kills, .13 aces, .51 digs and 1.40 blocks per set while hitting .280. Schwarzwalder ranks 12th nationally in blocks per set.
PETERSON RECORDS A SEASON-HIGH 31 ASSISTS IN THE WIN OVER MICHIGAN STATE
Amanda Peterson posted a season-high 31 assists in the win over Michigan State. She added three kills, three digs and three assist blocks against the Spartans. Peterson played in the fourth set against Michigan and collected 10 assists, three kills and two digs. She had her third start of the season against Michigan State and has played in 10 matches. Peterson is averaging 6.69 assists, 2.06 points, 1.25 kills, .25 aces, .88 digs and .94 blocks per set for the season.
HONE COLLECTS 30 ASSISTS AGAINST MICHIGAN
Betsy Hone posted 30 assists and added four kills and three digs in the Michigan match. She did not play against Michigan State. A starter in 14 of the 16 matches she has played, Hone is averaging 9.74 assists, 1.39 points, 1.02 kills, .12 aces, 1.56 digs and .44 blocks per set.
BOOTH HAS 11TH START OF THE SEASON AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE
Mariah Booth had her 11th start of the season against Michigan State and recorded two kills in the contest. She played in one set against Michigan and recorded two assist blocks. Booth has played in 16 matches this season and is averaging 1.98 points, 1.30 kills and 1.20 blocks per set.
LEARY SEES ACTION AGAINST MICHIGAN
Kaitlyn Leary came off the bench last weekend against Michigan and saw action in three of the four sets. She equaled her career high of four kills while hitting .500 (4-0-8). She also posted her first career ace serve and added two digs in the contest. She did not play against Michigan State. Leary has seen action in 10 matches this season and is averaging .93 points, .79 kills and .43 digs per set.
MIGNIN HAS PERFECT WEEKEND IN SERVE RECEPTION
Libero Sarah Mignin handled 59 serve reception attempts last weekend without an error in the matches against Michigan and Michigan State. She had 31 attempts against Michigan adding a team-high nine digs and a season-high five assists. Mignin posted 28 attempts against Michigan State adding a match-high eight digs, one ace serve and one assist. A starter in all 17 matches at libero, she is averaging a team-high 3.03 digs per set and has 17 aces (.29 per set) ranking second on the squad. Mignin has a team-high .962 serve reception percentage handling 453 of 471 attempts.
HALVERSON WORKING IN THE BACK ROW
Susan Halverson continues to provide support in the back row for the Buckeyes. Against Michigan, she recorded six digs and two assists and handled 18 of 19 serve receptions. Halverson had two digs and two assists against Michigan State and handled 11 of 12 serve receptions. She has played in all 17 matches this season and is averaging .93 digs per set and has a .952 serve reception percentage handling 217 of 228 attempts.
DISALVATORE CONTRIBUTES ON THE DEFENSE
Davionna DiSalvatore has started in 11 of the 17 matches this season in the back row. She started in both matches last weekend recording seven digs and handling 18 of 19 serve receptions against Michigan and posted two digs against Michigan State while handling 11 of 13 serve receptions. DiSalvatore, on the season, is averaging 1.19 digs per set and has a .925 serve reception percentage handling 223 of 241 attempts.
OHIO STATE IN THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE ONLY STATISTICS
Ohio State has three players, in four categories, ranked in the Big Ten Conference only statistics. Kelli Barhorst ranks third in hitting percentage at .415 and is sixth in blocks per set at 1.21. Betsy Hone ranks eighth in assists per set at 9.18 and Emily Danks is tied for sixth (five players) in aces per set at .33. In team statistics, OSU ranks fifth in blocks at 2.53 and is fourth in hitting percentage at .243. The Buckeyes are tied for sixth in aces (.93), ninth in kills (12.40), 10th in assists (11.27) and 11th in digs (10.73) per set.
OHIO STATE IN THE NCAA NATIONAL RANKINGS
In the NCAA National Rankings released Oct. 3, Allie Schwarzwalder is ranks 12th in blocks per set at 1.40. Mariah Booth is 65th at 1.17. Betsy Hone, with a 9.74 assists per set average, ranks 106th while Katie Dull is 75th in points per set with a 4.28 average and is 114th in kills per set with a 3.54 average. The Buckeyes rank third nationally in blocking at 3.06 per set, 13th in hitting percentage at .282 and 87th in kills per set at 13.10. OSU ranks 10th in aces at 1.93 per set and is 117th in assists per set at 11.78.
OHIO STATE RECEIVING VOTES IN THE AVCA POLL
In the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll this week, Ohio State received 32 votes and is four spots out of the Top 25. Five Big Ten squads are ranked in the Top 25 with Penn State fourth, Illinois sixth, Minnesota 16th, Michigan ranked 18th and Northwestern 24th. Ohio State and Purdue received votes.
MARIAH BOOTH NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 20, 2010
Mariah Booth was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the three matches of the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational. Returning to her hometown, the Kennesaw, Ga., native averaged a team-high 1.90 blocks per set for the three matches in helping the Buckeyes hold the three opponents to a combined .013 attack percentage and win the invitational.
Booth began the weekend with career highs of 11 assist blocks and nine kills in the 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Presbyterian. She hit .438 (9 kills, 2 errors) 16 attempts) in the match. In the 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-10) win over Coastal Carolina, Booth recorded eight kills and five assist blocks while hitting .375 (8-2-16). She closed out the weekend with four kills, one dig and three total blocks (1-2) while hitting .429 (4-1-7) against Kennesaw State.
Booth was named to the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 1.90 blocks, 2.10 kills and 3.10 points per set for the weekend.
A starter in 10 of the 12 matches she has played, Booth is averaging 1.31 blocks, 1.39 kills and 2.12 points per set for the season.
ALLIE SCHWARZWALDER NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 13, 2010
Allie Schwarzwalder was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the four Buckeye victories at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. She was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.08 blocks per set in the tournament.
Schwarzwalder had eight kills, four assist blocks and one dig in the 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) win over Brown. She had five kills, four digs and four assist blocks in the 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) victory at UMBC. Schwarzwalder produced her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 total blocks in the 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) win over Sacred Heart. She added thee digs and an ace serve in the match and her 10 total blocks and nine assist blocks were career highs. In the final match of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14) win over Towson, Schwarzwalder had five kills, a career-high four ace serves, one dig and nine total blocks with a solo and eight assists.
For the weekend, Schwarzwalder averaged 3.65 points, 2.08 blocks, 2.15 kills, .38 aces and .69 digs per set.
BUCKEYES HAVE THREE BIG TEN NETWORK APPEARANCES
The Big Ten Network will have three Ohio State matches shown live this season. Buckeye home matches against Minnesota (Oct. 16, 6 p.m.) and Penn State (Oct 20, 7 p.m.) and OSU’s road match at Michigan (Nov. 6, 6 p.m.) are part of the conference broadcast schedule.
BIG TEN COACHES PICK OHIO STATE TO FINISH FOURTH
By a vote of the Big Ten coaches, Ohio State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2010 season. The Buckeyes finished tied for fourth last season. Six-time defending champion Penn State was picked to finish first, Illinois season and Minnesota third. Rounding out the top six is Michigan fifth and Michigan State sixth.
KATIE DULL IS NAMED TO THE 2010 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Senior outside hitter Katie Dull was a unanimous selection to the 2010 preseason All-Big Ten team by a vote of the Big Ten coaches. Joining Dull on the team is Johannah Bangert, Michelle Bartsch, Laura DeBruler and Hillary Haen of Illinois; Ashley Benson of Indiana; Alex Hunt and Lexi Zimmerman of Michigan; Kyndra Abron of Michigan State; Lauren Gibbemeyer, Tabitha Love and Hailey Cowles of Minnesota; Sabel Moffett of Northwestern and Blair Brown, Alyssa D’Errico and Arielle Wilson of Penn State.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his third season at Ohio State. He directed the Buckeyes to a fourth place tie (12-8) in the Big Ten in 2009 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship finishing with a 25-10 overall record.
Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 244-97.
