Ohio State Concludes Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Eighth – Ohio State Buckeyes

Second-ranked Oklahoma State takes team title, Illinois’ Luke Guthrie take individual title after record-setting 65
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State men’s golf team had a tough go in the final round of the inaugural Jack Nicklaus Invitational Tuesday with a team score of 305 to finish in eighth place with a total of 894 (+54) on the par 70, 7,140-yard Scioto Country Club in Columbus.
The Buckeyes played host to a 10-team field filled with nationally-ranked squads, with second-ranked Oklahoma State taking the team title after firing a team score of 284 in the final round en route to an 864 (+24) for the tournament. The Cowboys finished six strokes ahead of a runner-up Illinois at 870, followed by Texas (871) and Arkansas (872).
Luke Guthrie of the Fighting Illini claimed the individual title with a 5-under 205. Guthrie began the day at the top of the leaderboard tied with Arkansas’ Jamie Marshall at even-par, but pulled away with a final round of 65. Guthrie’s final round of 65 set the Scioto Country Club’s course record following its 2008 renovation. It tied for the lowest competitive course round overall in the 94-year history of the club.
The top performer for Ohio State was Michael Cress, who finished in a tie for 10th place at 8-over 218. Starting on the back nine, the senior from Dublin, Ohio, had a rocky round but nabbed three birdies to help chip away at his score for a final round of 75. Cress lead the field in birdies for the tournament, with 13 total over three rounds of play.
Senior Bo Hoag finished the event in a tie for 16th place with a score of 221. The Upper Arlington product never got into a rhythm during the closing round after starting the day with a pair of bogeys and posted a score of 5-over 75.
Brad Smith tied for 26th place with a sum of 224. The senior from Peru, Ind., was 2-over at the turn, but struggled during his final nine holes and finished with a 76.
Junior Alex Redfield, from Columbus, closed out the tournament in 46th place with a score of 232 and a final round of 79. Rounding out the Ohio State lineup was sophomore Jamie Sindelar, from Horseheads, N.Y., in 52nd place with a score of 239 and a final round of 85.
Competing as an individual for the Buckeyes was Dan Charen. The junior from Langhorne, Pa., carded a final round of 73 for a total of 221 to tie for 16th place.
The Buckeyes will conclude their fall schedule at the Islesworth Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 24-26 in Orlando, Fla.
