Senior trio leads Buckeyes into final round at Scioto Country Club
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State men’s golf team welcomed an impressive nationally-ranked field to the Scioto Country Club for the opening two round of the 2010 Jack Nicklaus Invitational Monday. The Buckeyes finished the day in sixth place with scores of 294-295 to finish at 589 (+29) on the par 70, 7,140-yard course in Columbus.
No. 11 Arkansas holds the lead after day one, carding a team score of 18-over 578 to put them two strokes ahead of second-place and second-ranked Oklahoma State at 580 with No. 7 Illinois in third at 581. Southern California and Texas are tied for fourth at 586, followed by Ohio State.
In the individual standings, Luke Guthrie of Illinois and Jamie Marshall of Arkansas lead the field at even-par 140. Only six golfers turned in rounds under par.
Leading the way for Ohio State was senior Michael Cress, who heads into the final round in sixth place at 3-over 143. Starting on the back nine, Cress fired a 73 to start the day.
The second round looked as though it could spell trouble for the Dublin, Ohio, native as Cress posted a pair of double bogeys in the first four holes. He righted the ship quickly, however, carding five birdies in a row between Nos. 2-6 to bring him to even-par 70 for round two.
Just off Cress’ pace was fellow senior Bo Hoag in a tie for 12th place. Hoag was back-and-forth through much of the first round, tallying five bogeys and four birdies to finish with a 71. Hoag was on an even keel through much of round two, but two bogeys and a double bogey in his last six holes gave him a 75 to close out the day. Hoag will head into the final round at 6-over 146.
Brad Smith also found his way into the top 20, finishing the day in a tie for 17th place with a pair of 74s. The senior from Peru, Ind., sits just two strokes back of Hoag at 8-over 148 going into the final day of play.
Also competing for Ohio State was junior Alex Redfield, who posted rounds of 77-76. The Columbus native is tied for 41st place at 13-over 153. And rounding out the lineup for the Buckeyes’ was Jamie Sindelar at 14-over 154. The sophomore from Horseheads, N.Y., is tied for 43rd after rounds of 76-78.
Competing as an individual is junior Dan Charen. The Langhorne, Pa., native went 76-72 to finish in a tie for 17th with Smith at 148.
The Jack Nicklaus Invitational will conclude with a final round Tuesday. Ohio State will tee off of No. 10 between 9:34 and 10:06 a.m. and live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
