WVB: Buckeyes Fall at Purdue, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (14-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) lost a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 26-24) match at Purdue (13-4, 4-2) Saturday night in Holloway Gymnasium. Buckeye Kelli Barhorst scored a team-high 11.5 points in the match with 11 kills and one assist block. Purdue’s Ariel Turner and Tiffany Fisher shared match-high honors with 13.5 points each. Turner had a match-high 13 kills and one assist block while Fisher added 10 kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks.
Purdue opened set one with a Catherine Rebarchak kill, an Emily Ehlers ace serve, a Kristen Arthurs-Rebarchak block and a Turner kill for a 4-0 lead. A Barhorst kill stopped the run at 4-1 but the Boilermakers, with two Turner kills and an OSU error opened a 7-1 lead. Purdue held a 23-18 lead when an Allie Schwarzwalder kill and an Anna Szerszen-Schwarzwalder block cut the lead to three at 23-20. A Buckeye error gave the Boilermakers set point at 24-20. A Szerszen kill and a Sarah Mignin ace serve stopped two set points at 24-22. Purdue won the set, 25-22 with a Fisher kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Boilermakers hit .433 in the set to .412 for Ohio State.
Tied at three in set two, a Rebarchak kill and an OSU error gave Purdue a 5-3 lead. A Buckeye kill by Amanda Peterson and a Schwarzwalder solo block tied the set at five. Purdue opened up a 9-5 lead with kills from Turner and Fisher, a Jaclyn Hart-Fisher block and an OSU error. Purdue held a 22-15 lead when kills from Barhorst and Peterson and a Purdue error cut the lead to four at 22-18. An Arthurs-Katie Griffin block made it 23-18. Purdue reached set point at 24-18 with an Arthurs-Turner block. An OSU error gave Purdue a 25-18 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Boilermakers hit .233 for the set to .000 for Ohio State.
Purdue, with the third set tied at five, used kills from Hart and Griffin and a Fisher ace serve to take an 8-5 lead. The Boilermakers expanded the lead to seven at 20-13. OSU scored the next four points with kills from Szerszen and Danks and two Purdue errors to cut the lead to 20-17. At 22-19, a Barhorst kill and an Emily Danks ace serve cut the lead to one at 22-21. An OSU error made it 23-21. The Buckeyes, with two kills from Dull, tied the set at 23. Purdue reached match point at 24-23 with a kill from Hart. Szerszen stopped the match point with a kill to tie the set at 24. A kill from Fisher made it 25-24, giving the Boilermakers a second match point at 25-24. Purdue, with a kill from Hart, won the set, 26-24, to win the match, 3-0. The Boilermakers hit .308 in the set to .333 for Ohio State.
For the match, Purdue hit .323 to .248 for Ohio State. The Boilermakers had a 46-42 advantage in kills while each squad recorded 41 assists. Purdue’s Hart posted a match-high 35 assists with OSU’s Peterson recording 26. The Boilermakers had a 5-2 margin in ace serves with Emily Ehlers and Fisher sharing match high honors with two each. OSU gave up seven service errors to five for Purdue. Defensively, the Boilermakers had a 38-33 margin in digs with OSU’s Mignin recording a match-high 13 while Purdue’s Carly Cramer posted a team-high 10. At the net, the Boilermakers had a 9-8 edge in team blocks. Arthurs posted a match-high six assist blocks for Purdue while OSU’s Schwarzwalder posted a team-high four with a solo and three assist blocks.
Ohio State returns hone next week to begin a three-match home stand. The Buckeyes will host Iowa at 7 p.m. Friday and 16th-ranked Minnesota at 6 p.m. Saturday, a match that will be carried live by the Big Ten Network. They complete the home stand the following Wednesday with a 7 p.m. contest against fourth-ranked Penn State also being carried live on the Big Ten Network. All matches will be played in St. John Arena.
