Buckeyes Defeat Texas-Arlington, 3-0, to Finish Second at the Hilton Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-1) women’s volleyball team closed out play at the Colorado State Hilton Classic with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Texas Arlington (2-5). The Buckeyes finish second in the Classic with a 2-1 record with host Colorado State winning the championship with a 3-0 mark. Ohio State’s Katie Dull posted a match-high 17 points in the contest with 14 kills (.314), one ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks. Christy Driscoll scored a team-high 8.5 points for Texas Arlington with eight kills and an assist block.
Trailing 1-0 in the first set, Ohio State scored the next four points to take a 4-1 lead. The run began with a Dull kill and an Emily Danks-Kristen Dozier block. Two Danks-Dozier-Dull blocks completed the run. At 5-3, a Dozier kill, a Maverick error and a Dull ace serve gave Ohio State an 8-3 lead. The Buckeyes, leading 10-5, expanded the lead with a kill from Dull, an ace serve by Amanda Peterson and two Maverick errors to open a 14-5 lead. Ohio State expanded the lead to 14 on a Texas Arlington error to have set point at 24-10. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-10, with a Kelli Barhorst kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .733 in the set to -.263 for Texas Arlington.
Set two had nine times and five lead changes. Maverick kills from Raegan Daniel and Eld-hah Kaswatuka gave Texas Arlington a 2-0 lead. A Dull kill and a Maverick error tied the set at two. Tied at seven, the Mavericks opened a 10-7 lead with kills from Driscoll and Daniel and an OSU error. With Ohio State trailing, 11-8, a Maverick error and kills from Dull and Danks tied the game at 11. A Texas Arlington error gave Ohio State a 12-11 lead. The Mavericks tied the set at 12 with a Kaswatuka kill. Tied at 15, two Buckeye errors and a Jessica Jiles kill gave Texas Arlington an 18-15 lead. With Ohio State trailing, 20-17, two Maverick errors and a Betsy Hone ace serve tied the set at 20. An error by Texas Arlington and a kill from Danks gave Ohio State a 22-20 lead. An OSU error cut the lead to 22-21. A Barhorst kill and a Danks-Barhorst block gave Ohio State set point at 24-21. A Maverick error ended the game at 25-21, Ohio State giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. Texas Arlington hit .175 for the set to .118 for the Buckeyes.
Two Buckeye errors and a Dull kill opened set three giving Texas Arlington a 2-1 lead. A Danks kill tied the game at two and her ace serve gave Ohio State a 3-2 lead. A Buckeye error tied the set at three. Buckeye kills from Dozier, Peterson, Szerszen and Dull gave Ohio State a 7-3 lead. An Emily Shearin kill stopped the Buckeye run at 7-4. Two Maverick errors, a Barhorst kill and a Chelsea Noble ace serve put the Buckeyes ahead, 11-4. Ohio State maintained the lead to reach match point at 24-17 with a Barhorst kill. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-17 with a Peterson ace serve to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .250 for the set to .226 for the Mavericks.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .255 to .100 for Texas Arlington. OSU had a 42-22 advantage in kills and an eight to one margin in ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up nine service errors to seven for the Mavericks. Defensively, Ohio State had a 47-43 edge in digs with OSU’s Noble recording a match-high 12. At the net, the Buckeyes had a six to one margin in team blocks. OSU’s Danks posted a match-high four assist blocks in the match. At setter, OSU’s Peterson had a match-high 28 assists while Daniel had 14 for Texas Arlington.
Two Buckeyes, Kristen Dozier and Katie Dull, were named to the Hilton Classic All-Tournament Team. Also on the team were Daniel of Texas Arlington, Danielle Minch and Tessa Nelson of Colorado State. Jacque Davisson was named the most valuable player for the Rams.
Ohio State will spend a third consecutive week on the road as the travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to play in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Invitational. The Buckeyes face Western Michigan at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 12 and play host UW-Milwaukee at 7:30 p.m. CT that night. Ohio State continues the road trip Sunday with a match at Marquette at 1 p.m. CT.
