Ohio State Falls in Five Sets at Colorado State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-1) women’s volleyball team fell, 3-2 (25-17, 16-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-10) to host Colorado State (3-2) in the 18th Annual Hilton Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. Rams Jacque Davisson and Danielle Minch shared match-high honors with 17.5 points each. Davisson had 14 kills, two ace serves a solo block and one assist block while Minch posted a match-high 16 kills, an ace serve and one assist block. Ohio State’s Kristen Dozier scored a team-high 15.5 points with 14 kills, one ace serve and one assist block.
Two kills from Katie Dull opened set one for a 2-0 Buckeye lead. A Dana Cranston kill and a Minch ace serve tied the set at two. After several ties, OSU held a 12-11 lead when an Evan Sanders kill tied the set at 12. Two Buckeye errors and two Davisson ace serves gave Colorado State a 16-12 lead. With the Rams leading, 23-17, two Ohio State errors gave the set to Colorado State, 25-17. The Rams hit .344 in the set to .167 for Ohio State.
Tied at three in set two, a Ram error and an Amanda Peterson block gave the Buckeyes a 5-3 lead. An OSU error made it 5-4. Two kills from Dozier expanded the lead to 7-4. Colorado State cut the Ohio State lead to one several times, the last at 11-10 with a Cranston-Megan Plourde block. OSU scored the next five points to open a 16-10 lead. The run began with a Dozier kill and an Emily Danks ace serve. Two Ram errors and a Dozier kill made the margin six for the Buckeyes. A Davisson kill and an OSU error made it 16-12. Ohio State, with kills from Dull, two by Peterson and one from Dozier opened a 20-12 lead. A triple block by the Rams made it 20-13. A Dozier-Peterson block with a solo block by Anna Szerszen made it 22-13. Back-to-back kills from Minch made it 22-15. Errors by both squads made it 23-16. A Mariah Booth kill made it set point at 24-16. Ohio State won the set, 25-16 with a Dozier kill to tie the match at one game each. For the set, Ohio State hit .217 to .073 for Colorado State.
Tied at six in set three, an OSU error and an Sanders-Tessa Nelson block gave Colorado State an 8-6 lead. With Ohio State trailing, 13-11, two Ram errors tied the set at 13. Ohio State, with a Colorado State error, a Booth-Peterson block and a Dozier ace serve opened up a 16-13 lead. A Buckeye error made it 16-14. A Colorado State error, an Allie Schwarzwalder kill and a Peterson ace serve made it 19-14, OSU. Two Minch kills and a Ram error made it 20-16. A Ram error and a Plourde kill made it 21-17. Kills from Dull and Dozier made it 23-17. A Ram error made it 24-17 for set point for Ohio State. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-17, with a Dull kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .360 for the set to .103 for Colorado State.
Colorado State opened set four with a 2-0 lead off two Buckeye errors. Ohio State trailed, 11-9, when kills from Dull and Dozier tied the set at 11. At 14-all, a Nelson kill, an OSU error, two Davisson kill and a Cranston-Nelson block gave Colorado State a 19-14 lead. A Dull kill made it 19-15 but a Nelson kill and an OSU error made it 21-15. A Ram error and a Danks kill cut the Colorado State margin to four at 21-17. An OSU error and two Minch kill made it 24-17 and set point for the Rams. An Ohio State error ended the game at 25-17 and tied the match at two games each. For the set, Colorado hit .458 to .152 for the Buckeyes.
The Rams opened set five with a 2-0 lead off a Sanders-Nelson block and a Minch kill. Kills from Danks and Nelson made it 3-1 Rams. A Danks kill made it 3-2 but a Sanders’ solo block and her ace serve gave Colorado State a 5-2 lead. A Ram error and a Dozier kill cut the Colorado State lead to one at 5-4. The Rams took a three-point lead at 7-4 with a Plourde kill and a Buckeye error. A Ram error and a Booth kill cut the lead to one at 7-6. A Davisson kill made it 8-6. A Booth-Peterson block and a Danks kill tied the game at eight. A Nelson kill and two Ohio State errors opened an 11-8 Colorado State lead. A Booth kill made it 11-9. Two blocks from Sanders and Nelson made it 13-9, Rams. Danks, with a kill made it 13-10. An Ohio State error set match point at 14-10. Colorado State, with a Minch kill, won the set, 15-10, to capture the match, 3-2. The Rams hit .115 for the set to .000 for Ohio State.
For the match, Colorado State hit .204 to .178 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 57-48 margin in kills while the Rams had a 5-4 edge in ace serves. OSU gave up 13 service errors to 12 for Colorado State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 76-70 advantage in digs with OSU’s Chelsea Noble posting a match-high 23 digs to equal her career high. Katelin Batten recorded 22 for the Rams. At the net, Colorado State had an 11.5 to nine margin in team blocks. For the Rams, Sanders (one solo, five assist blocks) and Nelson (six assist blocks) shared match-high honors with six blocks each. Buckeye setter Peterson posted a match-high 41 assists in the contest while Sanders had 35 for Colorado State.
Ohio State continues play in the Hilton Classic Saturday at 10 a.m. MT facing Georgia Southern. The Buckeyes close out play at 5 p.m. MT against Texas Arlington.
