Buckeyes Take Fourth at Season-Opening Adams Cup of Newport – Ohio State Buckeyes

Three OSU golfers finish in top 20, led by Bo Hoag in a tie for eighth
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team wrapped up its season-opening tournament Tuesday afternoon at the 16th Annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic in Newport, R.I. The Buckeyes finished fourth in the 17-team field with a score of 887 (+23), just three strokes behind third-place New Mexico.
Ohio State closed the 54-hole event with a team score of 299 on the par-72, 7,244 yard Newport National Golf Course. SMU won the tournament at 12-over 876 and Jeb Buchanan of Connecticut was medalist with three rounds of 69.
The Buckeyes were led by junior Bo Hoag, who jumped into the top 10 to finish eighth overall. The Honorable Mention All-American from Upper Arlington carded three-consecutive rounds of 73 to finish with a 3-over 219. For the event, Hoag was 7-under in Par 5 scoring.
Junior Brad Smith fired a 1-over 73 in the final round to crack the top 20 and finish tied for 16th at 222 with teammate Brad Wright, who closed with a 75. Smith led the field in pars for the tournament with 38.
Rounding out the Buckeye lineup were sophomore Michael Kinkopf in a tie for 37th at 228 and senior David Becher who tied for 41st with a total of 229.
The Buckeyes will hit the fairways again Oct. 5-6 at the Fightin’ Irish Gridiron Golf Classic in South Bend, Ind.
