Buckeyes Defeat Cleveland State, 3-1, in the Sports Imports Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (11-1) women’s volleyball overcame a 26-24 set one win by Cleveland State (11-4) to win, 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15) in the second day of the Sports Imports Classic. Kristen Dozier posted a match-high 17 points with 15 kills (.682), a solo block and two assist blocks with Emily Danks adding 16.5 points with 14 kills (.565), an ace serve, a solo block and one assist block. Beth Greulich had a team-high 14 points for Cleveland State with 13 kills and two assist blocks.
In a close first set that saw seven lead changes and 14 ties, Ohio State trailed, 20-16, before a Viking error and kills from Danks and Anna Szerszen cut the margin to one at 20-19. A Buckeye error and a kill from Danks made it 21-20. A Viking error tied the set at 21. Tied at 23, a Dull-Dozier block gave Ohio State set point at 24-23. An OSU error tied the set at 24. A Greulich kill made it 25-24, Cleveland State with the Vikings serving set point. A Liz Fazio ace serve gave Cleveland State a 26-24 win in the set and a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .281 for the set to .212 for the Vikings.
Tied at five in set two, a Viking error and two Amanda Peterson ace serves gave the Buckeyes an 8-5 lead. At 9-6, A Jordan Goad kill and her ace serve cut the lead to one at 9-8. Two Viking errors and a Dozier kill opened a 12-8 Buckeye lead. Kills from Megan Barhorst and Greulich and a Fazio ace serve made it 12-11. A Viking error, a Danks ace serve and a Dozier solo block made it 15-11, OSU. The Buckeyes held the lead to reach set point at 24-19 off a Viking error. A Kara Koch kill stopped the set point at 24-20. Ohio State won the set, 25-20 with a Peterson kill to tie the match at one game each. The Buckeyes hit .346 for the set to .226 for Cleveland State.
With set three tied at two, kills from Dozier and Dull gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead. A Greulich kill made it 4-3. The Buckeyes began a six-point run with a Dull kill and two from Peterson. After a CSU timeout, Dozier and Dull contributed kills and with a Viking error, the Buckeyes had a 10-3 lead. A Buckeye error stopped the run. Ohio State scored the next seven points starting with a Viking error, a Szerszen solo block, her kill and a Dull Ace serve. Kills from Peterson and Dozier and a Dull ace serve completed the run to open a 17-5 lead. Ohio State reached set point at 24-10 with a solo block from Danks. CSU stopped the set point with a kill from Meghan Mental. A Viking error ended the set at 25-11 to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .522 for the set to -.083 for Cleveland State.
Tied at seven in set four, a six point Buckeye run opened a 13-7 Buckeye lead. The run began with a Viking error, kills from Danks and Mariah Booth and a Susan Halverson ace serve. After the CSU timeout, a kill from Dull and a Dull-Booth block made it 13-7. Ohio State reached match point at 24-15 with a kill from Dull. A Dull closed out the set for Ohio State at 25-15 to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 victory in the match. Ohio State hit .552 for the set to .056 for Cleveland State.
Ohio State hit .418 for the match to .123 for Cleveland State. The Buckeyes had a 58-37 advantage in kills and edged the Vikings, 8-7 in ace serves. OSU’s Dull and CSU’s Barhorst each posted three aces in the contest. The Buckeyes gave up 14 service errors to nine for the Vikings. Defensively, Ohio State had a 39-35 edge in digs. OSU’s Chelsea Noble collected a match-high 15 digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, OSU enjoyed a 10-4 margin in team blocks. Dozier and Dull each had three total blocks with a solo and two assists while Barhorst had three assists for the Vikings. At setter, OSU’s Peterson had a match-high 43 assists, while CSU’s Jordan Goad collected 33.
Ohio State will face Xavier at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the final match of the Sports Imports Classic.
