Buckeyes Earn Five-Set Victory at Marquette – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-1) women’s volleyball team won, 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) at Marquette (9-2) Sunday in the Al McGuire Center. Katie Dull posted a match-high 24 points in the contest with 17 kills, four ace serves and three solo blocks. Emily Danks contributed a career-high 18 points with 16 kills and four assists blocks while Anna Szerszen had 14 points with 11 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks. Golden Eagle Leslie Bielski scored a team-high 21.5 points for Marquette with 18 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and one assist block.
Set one was close with five lead changes and 14 ties. Tied at 14, two Marquette errors gave Ohio State a 16-14 lead. A Ciara Jones kill made it 16-15. Two Golden Eagle errors and a Danks kill made the Buckeye lead, 19-15. Trailing, 21-17, two kills from Bielski and an OSU error cut the lead to 21-20. A Rabbecka Gonyo kill tied the set at 21. A kill from Dull and a Dozier-Szerszen block made it 23-21 Buckeyes. An ace serve from Dull made it 24-21 with OSU serving set point. Gonyo stopped the set point with a kill at 24-22. Ohio State won the set, 25-22, with an Amanda Peterson kill. Marquette hit .195 for the set to .128 for the Buckeyes.
The Golden Eagles broke a 10-10 tie in set two with a Nikki Klingsporn ace serve, a Ciara Jones solo block and a Holly Mertens kill to take a 13-10 lead. A kill from Dull made it 13-11. A Marquette kill from Jones and two Buckeye errors gave the Golden Eagles a 16-11 lead. Marquette held the lead reaching set point at 24-16 with a Bielski kill. A Buckeye error gave the Golden Eagles a 25-16 win to tie the match at one set each. Marquette hit .476 for the set to .080 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State trailed, 9-7, in set three before scoring seven consecutive points to take a 14-9 lead. The run began with back-to-back kills from Danks to tie the set at nine. A Marquette error, a Danks kill and a Szerszen ace serve made it 12-9. Back-to-back blocks from Kelli-Barhorst and Danks made the lead, 14-9. At 21-18, kills from Szerszen and Barhorst and a Marquette error made it 24-18 and set point. A Nikki Klingsporn kill stopped the set point at 24-19. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with a Barhorst kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .321 for the set to .125 for the Golden Eagles.
Set four opened with a Bielski kill and three ace serves from Ashley Beyer to give Marquette a 4-0 lead. At 10-7 Marquette, kills from Dozier, Peterson and Szerszen tied the set at 10. A Marquette error and a kill from Szerszen made it 12-10, Ohio State. Trailing 14-11, Marquette scored the next six point to take a 17-14 lead. Three Buckeye errors, two kills from Holly Mertens and a Bielski solo block completed the scoring run. A Marquette error, a Szerszen ace serve and a kill from Danks tied the set at 17. At 21-all, an OSU error and a kill from Jones made it 23-21 Marquette. A Kelsey Mattai-Klingsporn block gave Marquette set point at 24-21. The Golden Eagles won the set, 25-21 with a Jones kill to tie the match, 2-2. Marquette hit .167 for the set to .135 for Ohio State.
Ohio State, with two kills from Danks and a Marquette error opened a 3-0 lead in the fifth set. An OSU error and a Beyer kill made it 3-2. Kills from Barhorst and Mertens made it 4-3. The score moved to 5-4 with kills from Dull and Bielski. Kills from Dull and Gonyo made it 6-5. A Bielski ace serve tied the set at six. Ohio State took an 8-6 lead with kills from Dull and Szerszen. The score moved to 9-7 with kills from Gonyo and Szerszen. A kill from Jones cut the Buckeye lead to one at 9-8. A Marquette error and a solo block from Dull gave Ohio State an 11-8 lead. A Buckeye error and a Danks kill made it 12-9. The Golden Eagles cut the margin to one at 12-11 with a Bielski kill and a Mertens-Gonyo block. A kill by Danks and a Marquette error made it 14-11 for the Buckeyes, serving match point. Bielski stopped the match point to make it 14-12 with a kill. Ohio State won the set, 15-12, with a kill from Dull to win the match, 3-2. The Buckeyes hit .409 for the set to .190 for the Golden Eagles.
For the match, Marquette hit .214 to .199 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 60-56 advantage in kills and edged the Golden Eagles 7-6 in ace serves. Katie Dull recorded a career-high four aces in the match. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to nine for Marquette. Defensively, Ohio State had a 61-53 margin in digs with OSU’s Chelsea Noble collecting a match-high 21. At the net, the Buckeyes edged Marquette 12-11 in team blocks. Gonyo posted a match-high five blocks with two solos and three assists for the Golden Eagles. At setter, OSU’s Peterson had a match-high 49 assists with Klingsporn recording 46 for Marquette.
Ohio State returns home to St. John Arena this weekend to host the Sports Imports Classic. The Buckeyes play Bowling Green (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday, Ohio State faces Cleveland State (9-2) at 11:30 a.m. and Xavier (5-5) at 7:30 p.m.
