MGLF: Summer Update Cress Advances to U.S. Amateur, Five Buckeyes Set to Play in Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

Michael Kinkopf is U.S. Am alternate; tee times announced for first round of Nationwide Tour event Thursday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael Cress, a rising junior on the Ohio State men’s golf team, advanced past sectional qualifying to earn a spot in the field at the 2009 U.S. Amateur. The Dublin, Ohio, native fired rounds of 69-71 for a total of 140 Monday on the Moraine Country Club’s golf course in Dayton to tie for the lowest score. The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Cress secured one of three positions available from the Dayton site, with Buckeye sophomore-to-be Michael Kinkopf finishing as an alternate for the event after rounds of 73-69—142. Seventy-eight players competed at Moraine, including fellow Ohio State players Bo Hoag, Tanner Murphy, Evan Wood and Alex Redfield.
At Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, the final preparations are underway for the third annual Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational. The Nationwide Tour event begins Thursday and features the third-largest purse on the schedule as well as five Buckeyes in the field: Ryan Armour (1995-98), Colin Biles (2004-07), Craig Kanada (1989-91), recent Ohio Open champ Vaughn Snyder (2008-09) and Hoag, who is competing as an amateur.
Tee times are set for the first round with Armour the first Ohio State product off at 7:50 a.m. Hoag and Snyder (10 tee) will begin at 9 a.m., with afternoon times for Kanada at 12:40 p.m. and Biles at 1:50 p.m. Besides Snyder, all others will start off No. 1.
