Buckeyes start summer tournament action with strong performances
COLUMBUS, Ohio Members of the Ohio State men’s golf team have opened their summer slate with strong performances. Recent Buckeye grad Vaughn Snyder competed in the 2009 U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage, while junior-to-be Bo Hoag won the Monroe Invitational with teammate Brad Wright in second by a stroke.
At the U.S. Open, Snyder played three holes into his first round Thursday when severe rain washed out the rest of the day. The Massillon, Ohio, native concluded his first round with a 76 on the par 70, 7,426-yard Bethpage Black, making par on 14 holes. He followed with a 78 Saturday for a total of 154 to miss the cut by 10 strokes. Snyder was one of just 156 golfers to make the elite field.
Also in the state of New York, a pair of Buckeyes took the top two spots last Saturday at the 69th Monroe Invitational in Pittsford. Hoag charged up the leaderboard from fourth to take the title with a final round of 69 at Monroe Golf Club. The Upper Arlington native had scores of 70-71-67-69 for a total of 277.
Wright, a rising senior from Cambridge, Ohio, also carded a final round of 69 and finished tied for second with two-time Monroe champ Phillip Mollica of Clemson. Wright, who started the final round in fifth, was second by a stroke with scores of 68-72-69-69.
