Jim Brown’s storied 36-year coaching career comes to an end at his 19th NCAA championship tournament
TOLEDO, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team battled through bad weather, tough course conditions and two delayed rounds to finish in 25th place at the 2009 NCAA Championships Friday at the Inverness Club in Toledo. The tournament marked the end to Jim Brown’s 36-year career as head coach of the Buckeyes. The 1966 Ohio State grad, who won an NCAA championship and 17 Big Ten titles, announced his retirement last June.
For the second-consecutive morning, the Buckeyes were at the course as the sun was rising to conclude their third round after play was called Thursday at 8:45 p.m. because of darkness. After an hour and seven minutes to finish four rounds, the team wrapped up its season with a 54-hole score of 901 (+49) on the par 71, 7,255-yard course.
Senior Vaughn Snyder closed out his OSU career with the best round by a Buckeye in the event. The Massillon, Ohio, native’s 2-under 69 included seven birdies. Snyder, a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree who transferred to Ohio State in December 2007, tied for 70th in his last tournament with a total of 10-over 223.
Also tying for 70th was Brad Wright. The junior from Cambridge, Ohio, had a final score of 74. He started with birdies on his first two holes and was even at the turn, but made three bogeys on his last nine holes.
All three Buckeye sophomores Michael Cress, Bo Hoag and Brad Smith finished with 77s. Cress and Hoag both concluded their rounds in the morning. Smith was the only OSU player to finish his round Thursday night but came to the course with his teammates to cheer them on.
Hoag tied for 120th place with a sum of 229 (+16), while Cress and Smith were two strokes back in a tie for 131st.
The top 8 teams after 54-holes of stroke play began match play Friday morning. The quarterfinals include: (1) Oklahoma State vs. (8) Georgia, (2) Arizona State vs. (7) Texas A&M, (3) Southern California vs. (6) Michigan, and (4) Arkansas vs. (5) Washington.
Semifinal matches also will be played Friday with the final two teams facing off for the championship Saturday morning.
The NCAA individual champion was crowned Thursday with individual Matt Hill of N.C. State winning it at 6-under. He took it by two strokes over another individual competitor, Kyle Stanley of Clemson.
