COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team held its first of three exhibitions Sunday in St. John Arena in front of more than 50 fans.
The preseason meet was one of seven in Columbus for the Buckeyes in the 2010 season leading up to the 2010 Big Ten Championship held in St. John Arena April 2-3.
The Buckeyes will next see action in the Scarlet & Gray Intrasquad at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 and concludes their preseason with the Varsity Exhibition at 2 p.m. Jan. 9.
Miles Avery, Ohio State head coach, was pleased with the performance of his team today.
“We got off to a little shaky start today but that’s expected for the first time in front of fans and judges,” Avery said. “The guys had fun and they looked good. That’s all you can ask for in an event like today.”
Avery said pommel horse is shaping up to be very deep in talent this year, including performances from freshman John Laing and sophomore Matt Rayl today.
While parallel bars and high bar also are looking like strong events for the Buckeyes. With three returning All-Americans, Brandon Wynn, Ty Echard and Steven Spencer the team is full of talent and experience this year.
The Buckeyes will attempt to work out in St John Arena as many times as they can this season to be comfortable with the equipment and atmosphere.
“We want St. John Arena to truly feel like a home atmosphere by the time the Big Ten Championships come around,” Avery said. “It’s a pleasure to have the support of the administration and everyone to be so open to set up equipment to allow us to workout in here.”
At the exhibition, the Buckeyes had a full lineup compete on all six Olympic events in front of judges and fans to simulate the environment at regular-season competitions.
