Buckeyes Drop 3-1 Decision to Fifth-Ranked Minnesota – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (14-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22) decision at fifth-ranked Minnesota (14-3, 5-0) Friday night in the Sports Pavilion. OSU’s Katie Dull posted a team-high 23 points in the match with 22 kills and two assist blocks. Kelli Barhorst added 10.5 points with nine kills and three assist blocks. For Minnesota, Brook Dieter recorded a match-high 30.5 points with 24 kills, four ace serves and five assist blocks. Lauren Gibbemeyer added 20.5 points with 17 kills, a solo block and five assist blocks.
Tied at three in set one, Ohio State scored four consecutive points to take a 7-3 lead. The run included two Kristen Dozier kills and two Minnesota errors. Trailing 14-9, a Megan Wilson kill, a Dieter-Ariana Filho blocks, Dieter-Filho-Wilson block and a Dieter kill cut the Ohio State lead to one at 14-13. At 16-14, OSU, a Dieter kill and an OSU error tied the set at 16. At 20-all, kills from Emily Danks and Kelli Barhorst gave OSU a 22-20 lead. A Tabitha Love-Filho block and an OSU error tied the set at 22. A kill from Ashley Hughes and a Minnesota error gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-22. Back-to-back kills from Dieter stopped two set points to tie the set at 24. A Golden Gopher error made it 25-24, OSU, giving the Buckeyes a third set point. A Minnesota error ended the set at 26-24 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .154 for the set to .163 for Minnesota.
A kill from Anna Szerszen and a Minnesota error gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in set two. A Filho kill and an OSU error tied the set at two. Buckeye kills from Dull and Hughes and a Minnesota error opened a 5-2 OSU lead. A Buckeye error and two kills from Dieter tied the set at five. At 10-all, a Barhorst gave Ohio State an 11-10 lead. Minnesota tied the set at 11 with a kill from Filho. A Buckeye error and a Dieter kill gave Minnesota a 13-11 lead. At 15-13, a Dull kill cut the Minnesota lead to one at 15-14. The Golden Gophers, with a Dieter kill, a Gibbemeyer-Carico block, a Dieter ace serve and an OSU error took a 19-14 lead. At 22-17, a Dieter-Filho block followed by a Dieter kill made it set point at 24-17. A Buckeye error ended the set at 25-17 to tie the match at 1-1. Minnesota hit .429 for the set to .200 for Ohio State.
Tied at nine in set three, an OSU error and a Dieter ace serve gave Minnesota an 11-9 lead. At 15-12, two Minnesota errors and an Emily Danks kill tied the set at 15. At 16-all, a Gibbemeyer kill and an OSU error gave Minnesota an 18-16 lead. A Dull kill and a Hughes-Dozier block tied the set at 18. Minnesota, with a Gibbemeyer kill and a Gibbemeyer-Carico block took a 20-18 lead. Trailing, 23-21, a Buckeye block from Barhorst and Szerszen and a Barhorst kill tied the game at 23. The Buckeyes took a 24-23 lead with a Barhorst-Szerszen block and had set point. After a Minnesota time out, an OSU error tied the set at 24. Minnesota took a 25-24 lead with a Filho kill and were serving set point. A kill from Danks stopped the set point and made the score 25-25. Back-to-back kills from Dieter closed out the set, 27-25 for Minnesota to give the Golden Gophers a 2-1 lead in the match. Minnesota hit .324 for the set to .231 for Ohio State.
With set four tied at two, a Wilson ace serve, a Gibbemeyer-Dieter block and a Gibbemeyer kill gave Minnesota a 5-2 lead. At 8-6 Minnesota, a Barhorst kill and a Minnesota error tied the set at eight. At nine-all, two kills from Dull gave OSU an 11-9 lead. At 13-11, two Dieter kills tied the set at 13. At 15-all, a Filho kill and an OSU error gave Minnesota a 17-15 lead. A Danks kill, a Barhorst-Dull block tied the set at 17. Ohio State took a 19-17 lead with a Barhorst-Dull block and a Minnesota error. Minnesota tied the set at 19 with a Love kill and an OSU error. At 21-all, a Buckeye error and a Dieter kill gave Minnesota a 23-21 lead. A block by Gibbemeyer and Wilson made it 24-21 Minnesota, serving match point. Dull, with a kill, stopped the match point at 24-22. A kill from Gibbemeyer ended the set, 25-22, to give Minnesota, a 3-1 match win. The Golden Gophers hit .204 for the set to .140 for Ohio State.
For the match, Minnesota hit .260 to .176 for Ohio State. The Golden Gophers had a 62-55 margin in kills and a 5-2 advantage in ace serves. Golden Gopher Dieter posted a match-high four aces. Minnesota gave up eight service errors to five for Ohio State. Each team recorded 62 digs in the match with OSU’s Chelsea Noble recording a match-high 20 digs. Christine Tan had 14 for Minnesota. At the net, the Golden Gophers had a 12.5 to five margin in total blocks. Gibbemeyer (one solo, five assists) and Filho (six assists) shared match-high honors with six blocks each. At setter, Carico had a match-high 57 assists for Minnesota while OSU’s Hughes recorded 43.
Ohio State continues on the road next week when they play at 18th-ranked Michigan State Friday (6:30 P.M. ET) and at eighth-ranked Michigan Saturday (7 p.m.).
