Buckeyes Defeat Michigan State, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (15-5 overall, 3-4 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind 22 points from Katie Dull and 12.5 from Emily Danks defeated Michigan State (14-5, 2-5), 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 16-25, 25-21) Friday evening in Jenison Field House. Dull recorded a match-high 19 kills adding one ace serve, one solo block and two assist blocks. Dull had nine kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks. Michigan State’s Becca Zlabis posted a team-high 14 points with 12 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks. Kyndra Abron added 11 points with 10 kill and two assist blocks.
With set one tied at 1-1, a Spartan error and a Danks ace serve gave Ohio State a 2-1 lead. The set remained close, reaching 9-8, when the Buckeyes scored four consecutive points to take a 13-8 lead. The run began with a kill from Danks, two from Dull and a Spartan error. At 15-11, two Michigan State errors, an Ashley Hughes service ace and an Anna Szerszen kill gave Ohio State an eight-point lead. Michigan State, with kills from Natalie Emro and Abron, an OSU error and a Cheyenne VanDersteen kill cut the lead to four at 19-15. At 20-15, kills from Abron and Zlabis and an Emro ace serve made it a two-point set at 20-18. Leading, 22-20, kills from Dull and Szerszen made it set point for Ohio State at 24-21. An OSU error stopped the set point at 24-21. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-21, with a Spartan error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .385 for the set to .161 for the Spartans.
With set two tied at five, a Zlabis-Abron block, an OSU error and an Abron kill gave Michigan State an 8-5 lead. Two Spartan errors cut the lead to one at 8-7. A solo block by Emro, a Jenilee Rathje kill and two aces from Emro made it 12-7 Michigan State. Trailing by five, Ohio State scored the next six points to take a 13-12 lead. The run began with a Spartan error. A Kelli Barhort-Danks block, a solo block from Danks and an awarded point by the official cut the Michigan State lead to one at 12-11. A Spartan error tied the set at 12 and a Barhorst kill gave OSU a 13-12 lead. An OSU error made it 13-13. After several ties the score was 18-all. A Kristen Dozier kill and an ace serve by Danks gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. With Ohio State leading, 23-21, a Buckeye error cut the lead to one at 23-22. OSU reached set point with a kill from Hughes at 24-22. A Zlabis kill and a block from Zlabis and Rathje tied the set at 24. A Spartan error made it 25-24. An Abron kill tied the set at 25. Ohio State took a 26-25 lead with a kill from Barhorst. On OSU’s fourth set point, a Dozier-Dull block gave Ohio State a 27-25 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .057 for the set to .071 for Michigan State.
Tied at two in set three, MSU kills from Megan Schatzle and Vanessa King gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead. The Spartans expanded the lead to four at 9-5. A kill from Danks and an ace serve from Sarah Mignin cut the lead to 9-7. An Emro kill and an OSU error made it 11-7. A Spartan error, a Barhorst ace serve and a kill from Danks made it 11-10. A Zlabis kill gave the Spartans a two-point lead at 12-10. Ohio State tied the set with kills from Danks and Dull at 12. At 13-all, Michigan State scored the next seven points to take a 20-13 lead. Two kills from Schatzle, one each from King and Emro and three OSU errors made up the scoring run. Michigan State reached set point at 24-16 with a Zlabis kill. A solo block from Zlabis ended the set at 25-16 to make it 2-1 Ohio State in the match. The Spartans hit .440 for the set to -.031 for Ohio State.
Ohio State opened set four with a Danks-Barhorst block, a Spartan error and a Barhorst kill for a 3-0 lead. Michigan State scored four of the next five points to tie the set at four. At six-all, kills from Dull and Hughes and a Dull ace serve gave Ohio State a 9-6 lead. At 12-9, a kill from Abron cut the Buckeye lead to two at 12-10. Two Spartan errors and a kill from Danks gave OSU a 15-10 lead. Trailing, 17-12, a Schatzle kill, a Spartan error and a King-Schatzle block cut the lead to 17-15. Leading, 22-20, kills from Danks and Dull made it 24-20 with Ohio State at match point. King, with a kill, stopped the match point at 24-21. A Dozier kill gave the Buckeyes a 25-21 win in the set and a 3-1 victory in the match. Ohio State hit .324 for the set to .392 for the Spartans.
For the match, the Spartans outhit Ohio State, .237 to .173. The Buckeyes had a 51-46 advantage in kills while each team recorded six ace serves. Emro posted a match-high three aces for the Spartans. Michigan State gave up 14 service errors to eight for OSU. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 48-40 margin in digs. OSU’s Chelsea Noble and MSU’s Zlabis shared match-high honors with 16 digs each. At the net, the Spartans had an 11.5 to seven margin in team blocks. MSU’s King posted match-high honors with six assist blocks. Emro recorded 38 assists for Michigan State while OSU’s Hughes collected 37.
Ohio State completes the weekend with a match at eighth-ranked Michigan (16-4, 4-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday night in Cliff Keen Arena.
