Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Falls 3-2 at No. 22 Wichita State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (5-2 overall; 0-0 Big Ten), down 0-2, rallied to reach the fifth set before falling, 3-2 (25-16, 25-13, 17-25, 24-26, 18-16) to No. 22 Wichita State in the final match of the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. Wichita State finishes the Classic with a 4-0 record while Ohio State and Cal State Bakersfield finished at 3-1. Ohio State’s Kristen Dozier scored a match-high 19.5 points for the Buckeyes with 16 kills, a solo block and five assists. Kaila Calhoun added 18.5 points with 17 kills and three assist blocks. Shocker Emily Stockman had a team-high 18.5 points for Wichita State with 18 kills and an assist block. Lindsey Eckenrode added 14 points with 12 kills and four assist blocks.
Tied at one in set one, a two Shocker kills from Angela Jakubov and one from Eckenrode, an OSU error and a Stephanie Tokarz-Eckenrode block opened a 6-1 lead for Wichita State. The Shockers held the lead and at 23-16, two Eckenrode kills ended the set at 25-16. Wichita State hit .359 in the set to .167 for Ohio State. Calhoun and Dozier posted four kills each in the set.
Wichita State broke a 1-1 tie with kills from Katie Niggemeyer and Mary Elizabeth Hooper and an OSU error for a 4-1 lead. The Shockers held the lead reaching set point at 24-12 with a Stockman kill. Buckeye Lisa Prang stopped the set point with a kill at 24-13. Wichita State won the set, 25-13, with a Sarah McGee kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Shockers hit .200 in the set to .000 for the Buckeyes. Allie Schwarzwalder had a team-high three kills in the set.
The Shockers held a 3-1 lead in set three before kills from Ashley Hughes and Calhoun tied the set at three. Tied at four, a Shocker error and a Schwarzwalder kill gave the Buckeyes a 6-4 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to six at 18-12 before a four-point Shocker run cut the lead to two at 18-16. Two Wichita State errors and a kill from Schwarzwalder took the margin to 21-16. A Stockman kill cut the lead to four at 21-17. Two Shocker errors and a Chelsea Noble kill made it 24-17 and set point for OSU. A Hughes-Dozier block ended the set at 25-17 to cut the Wichita State lead to 2-1 in the match. Ohio State hit .342 in the set to .143 for the Shockers. Schwarzwalder collected seven kills for the Buckeyes in the set.
Wichita State broke a 6-6 tie in set four with a Hooper kill and two OSU errors to hold a 9-6 lead. The Shockers expanded the lead to five at 15-10. OSU responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 16. Included in the Buckeye run were kills from Dozier and Calhoun, two Schwarzwalder-Hughes blocks, a Betsy Hone ace serve and a Shocker error. Tied at 17, two OSU errors and a Melissa Granville ace serve gave Wichita State a 20-17 lead. Buckeye kills from Schwarzwalder, Hone and Dozier and a Shocker kill from Stockman tied the set at 21. After ties at 22 and 23, an Eckenrode-McGee block gave the Shockers match point at 24-23. A Calhoun kill tied the set at 24. A Noble kill gave OSU a 25-24 lead. Calhoun tied the match at two sets each with a kill for a 26-24 win. Ohio State hit .265 for the set to .282 for Wichita State. Calhoun had six kills in the set with Dozier adding five.
The fifth set saw six ties and three lead changes. Tied at three, Wichita State took a 6-3 lead with a kill from Niggemeyer and blocks from Hooper-Niggemeyer and Stockman-Niggemeyer. The Shockers pushed the lead to five at 10-5. At 13-9, a kill from Dozier and a Noble-Dozier block cut the margin to two at 13-11. An Eckenrode-McGee block set match point for Wichita State at 14-12. Buckeye kills from Dozier and Calhoun and a Calhoun-Dozier block tied the set at 14. A Hone kill set an OSU match point at 15-14. A McGee kill tied the set at 15. A Dozier kill gave OSU a second match point at 16-15. The Shockers tied the set at 16 with a Stockman kill. An OSU error made it 17-16 Wichita State and gave them their four match point. The Shockers won the set with a Niggemeyer kill at 18-16, winning the match, 3-2. Wichita State hit .120 for the set to .107 for the Shockers. Dozier had four kills and three blocks in the set with Calhoun adding three kills and two blocks.
For the match, Wichita State hit .229 to OSU’s .184. Each team recorded 64 kills in the match with the Shockers having a 6-1 edge in ace serves. Granville had all six aces for Wichita State. The Shockers had a 78-77 margin in digs with Kelly Broussard collecting a match-high 26 for the Shockers. Each team recorded a total of 10 team blocks. Dozier collected a match-high six with one solo and five assists. Buckeye Hone had a team-high 30 assists in the match with Hughes adding 21.
Ohio State’s Dozier and Calhoun were named to the Best Western Shocker Classic All-Tournament Team. Also named were Paige Palmer of Idaho State, Megan Bickford of Coastal Carolina, Mystie McNaughton and Rosemary Stribling of Cal State Bakersfield and McGee and Hooper of Wichita State. Wichita State’s Stockman was named the Most Valuable Player of the Classic.
The Buckeyes continue their 12-day road trip next week, traveling west to Los Angeles, Calif., to face Loyola Marymount (4-2) Wednesday and seventh-ranked Southern California (4-2) Friday. Both matches begin at 10 p.m. EDT starts.
