Women’s Volleyball: Balanced Buckeye Attack gives Ohio State a 3-0 Victory over Coastal Carolina – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (3-1 overall; 0-0 Big Ten), with three players recording double-figure points, defeated Coastal Carolina (2-2), 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) in the opening match of the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. Katie Dull scored a match-high 15.5 points for the Buckeyes with Kristen Dozier adding 15 and Kaila Calhoun 10.5. Dull and Dozier shared match-high honors with 13 kills each. Dull added a career-high five assist blocks while Dozier posted two assist blocks and an ace serve. Calhoun had 10 kills and added an assist block. Chelsy Kimes posted nine points for Coastal Carolina with eight kills and two assist blocks.
Ohio State took a quick 8-0 lead in the first set behind the serving of Dozier. A Dozier kill opened the game. With two kills from Dull, one from Allie Schwarzwalder, a Dozier ace serve, an Ashley Hughes solo block, a Schwarzwalder-Hughes block and a Coastal Carolina error Ohio State held an 8-0 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead and reached set point at 24-15 off a Coastal Carolina error. An OSU service error made it 24-16. Ohio State closed out the game at 25-16 with a Dull kill. In the set, Ohio State hit .265 to .030 for Coastal Carolina. Dozier had five kills in the set with Dull adding four.
The Buckeyes scored the first five points in set two with two Dozier kills, one from Calhoun and two ace serves from Chelsea Noble. Leading 9-5, a Coastal Carolina error, a Noble kill and an ace serve from Laura Kastein opened up a 12-5 lead. At 20-12, a Hughes kill, two kills from Calhoun and a Coastal Carolina error gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-12. A Buckeye service error made it 24-13. Ohio State, with a block by Dull and Hughes ended the game at 25-13. The Buckeyes hit .345 for the set to -.059 for Coastal Carolina. Dozier had five kills in the set with Calhoun adding four.
A Dull kill opened set three to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. The set stayed close early with two lead changes and six ties. Coastal Carolina tied the set at eight with a Jill Nyhof-Kristin Wolf block. A Dozier-Dull block gave Ohio State a 9-8 lead. Kills from Calhoun and Dull and a Coastal Carolina error opened a 12-8 Buckeye lead. At 13-9, A Nyhof-Kelsie Mauck block, a Buckeye error and a Kimes kill cut the lead to one at 13-12. Two Coastal Carolina errors and a Calhoun kill gave the Buckeyes a 16-12 lead. Leading 21-18, Ohio State scored the next three points to reach match point at 24-18. The run included a Coastal Carolina error, a Betsy Hone kill and a Schwarzwalder-Dull block. A Kimes kill stopped the match point at 24-19. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with a Dull kill to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .286 for the set to .012 for Coastal Carolina. Dull recorded six kills and two assist blocks in the set.
For the match, Ohio State hit .286 to .012 for Coastal Carolina. The Buckeyes had a 46-22 margin in kills and edged Coastal Carolina, 4-2 in ace serves. Ohio State had a 36-23 margin in digs and a 9.5 to six advantage in team blocks. Ohio State’s Susan Halverson collected a match-high 10 digs for her career high. Hughes posted 28 assists in the match and equaled her career-high of five total blocks (1-3) in the match.
The Buckeyes continue play in the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic at 2:30 p.m. EDT against Idaho State (0-3). Ohio State returns to action in the Classic Saturday at 8:30 a.m. EDT when they face Cal State Bakersfield (0-3) and close out play at 9 p.m. EDT against host Wichita State (4-0).
