We’re about to go to bed after a long day in Beijing. I have lots to tell you about, but I’m exhausted and can’t really concentrate on anything much.
I guess that being here, the sightseeing, etc. the whole China experience has been superficial for me. This place is just a backdrop for what Margot is going through. I have enjoyed so many things and people here, but haven’t studied the history, paid attention as I would normally do in a country like this.
I regret that you are getting the “light” version of China. I intend to update the blog with more information when I get back to the U.S. and more reliable service. So, if you care to continue to read, I will try to add thoughts about the place and people and more pictures.
For right now though, it’s hard to think about anything other than my little girl, my baby, is facing a tremendous challenge tomorrow. It’s a challenge she can handle, is ready for, and it is just one of the many challenges she will face in life. It is also the realization of a dream and the fulfillment of a goal. No matter what happens tomorrow, she will be stroking the sixth fastest women’s quad in the world. Not bad for four women who have been rowing this boat together for less than five months.
We saw her in her hotel last night for a little while and she was worried that she was getting sick = mother panic until she confirmed late this morning that she felt “awesome.”
It’s a terrific thrill, almost an unbearable one, to be here and be able to share the culmination of all her work and sacrifice. A lot of you had a part in this too – your love and support have meant so much to her and to all of us.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Margot Shumway, an Ohio State rowing letterwinner from 2001-02, and the U.S. women’s quadruple sculls crew will compete for a gold medal Sunday at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The race is scheduled to begin at 4:30 a.m. EST. A tape delay broadcast of the rowing portion of the games will air on NBC beginning at noon EST.
Shumway, who rows stroke, and the U.S. team began their quest for gold last Sunday at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in the Shunyi District. Great Britain won the heat in 6:13.70 to automatically qualify for the medal race, joining China from heat one as finals contenders. The remaining six teams from both heats went on to row in the Repechage where the Top 4 crews advanced to the final.
The United States finished second in the Repechage in a time of 6:39.53 behind Germany who crossed the finish line in 6:36.17. Australia (6:41.39) and the Ukraine (6:41.45) rounded out the Top 4, while Canada (6:46.60) and the Russian Federation (6:51.14) will compete in the B Finals for places 7-12.

“Hey everyone,
For you guys it is now officially my birthday, but for me it started about 8 hours ago when I got up. People at breakfast were wishing me happy birthday and I’ve been getting emails and Facebook messages throughout the day from friends and family. Thank you for all your emails and thoughts, they mean so much to me while I’m away. I even got flowers from the hotel manager today. I think that Ken probably asked our interpreter/translator to do it. Otherwise this hotel is on top of things. They are beautiful and it was a very nice surprise and there was even a card that said happy birthday and good luck at the games. Very very sweet and I even took pictures with the manager and staff workers. It was pretty cool, though I was a bit shocked and started sweating a lot.
We did pieces this morning and they were hard but good so it has been an eventful day so far and I have definitely not felt alone on my birthday.
We’ve got about 8 days before our first race and I’m starting to get really excited. This is what I’ve worked for all year and I’m ready to just lay it out there and totally race my guts out.
Nothing really new to report just that I’M 29 YEARS OLD NOW! haha. Anyway, thanks again for all the thoughts and emails. Love to all of you and I hope you are doing well back home.
Love,
Margot”
