Men’s Lacrosse: No. 10 Buckeyes Lose GWLL Final to No. 6 Notre Dame, 9-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 10 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost to No. 6 Notre Dame, 9-2, in the final of the inaugural Great Western Lacrosse League tournament Sunday at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Mich. The tourney title gives top-seed Notre Dame (13-2) the league’s automatic bid into the 2008 NCAA Championship. The No. 2 seed Buckeyes (10-5, 4-1/t-1st GWLL) await the announcement of the 16-team NCAA tournament field at 9 p.m. Sunday on ESPNU to see if they receive an at-large bid into the tourney.
Notre Dame led, 3-1, at the end of the first quarter and 5-1 at halftime. The Irish opened the scoring on Ryan Hoff’s goal at 12:59 and Ohio State tied the score 58 seconds later when Kevin Buchanan set up Joel Dalgarno (12:01). Notre Dame then scored the next four goals and shut out the Buckeyes for the next 37 minutes, until the 5:01 mark of the third. Kelly McKenna scored at 9:24 of the first for ND. Peter Christman had a hand in the next three goals to close out the half, scoring man-up at 4:46, tallying at even strength at 3:20 and setting up Grant Krebs for a man-up goal with 20 seconds remaining before halftime.
Each team scored once in the third quarter. The Buckeyes scored the first goal of the second half when Dalgarno set up Buchanan at 5:01 and Krebs scored for the Irish with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. The Irish outscored the Buckeyes, 3-0, in the fourth quarter, as Zach Brenneman scored at 7:16, Alex Wharton tallied man-up at 3:33 and Ryan Hoff ended the scoring with 2:54 on the clock.
The Buckeyes outshot Notre Dame, 41-34, in the game. Notre Dame goalie Joey Kemp made 18 saves in all 60 minutes in the cage. Buckeye senior goalie Stefan Schroder had 10 stops, including seven in the second half, in 60 minutes.
The Irish converted all three of their man-up chances in the game. Ohio State did not have an extra-man opportunity.
Ohio State won 6-of-15 faceoffs in the game, with junior Nick Carr going 6-8.
Game Notes
Dalgarno and Buchanan share the team scoring lead with 69 points each, tying for the sixth-best single-season in Ohio State history. Buchanan has a team-best 40 goals, ranking eighth in program history in a season. Dalgarno leads the team with 32 assists, tying Todd Walker (1977) for sixth in a single season.
Buchanan is second in program history with 168 points (93g, 75a), behind only Terry Gilmore, who had 250 points (123g, 127a) from 1976-79. He is tied for fourth in the record book for career assists (Craig Cooper, 1974-78; Mike Norton, 2000-03). Buchanan is on a 44-game scoring streak (89-71-159), has multiple points in each of his last 27 games and is on a 24-game goal-scoring streak.
Dalgarno now has 90 goals, 70 assists and 160 points for the Scarlet and Gray to rank fifth in program history in points and seventh in career assists.
Schroder had his 10th game this season with 10 or more saves, including the ninth time in the last 12 outings.
On defense, the team has held its opponents to nine goals or less in 11-of-15 games this season.
A number of scoring streaks were ended in the loss. Junior Peet Poillon had his scoring streak stopped at 11 and was held scoreless for just the second time this season. Junior Jeff Ryan had his streak of consecutive games with a point stopped at 13. Sophomore James Green had his point streak stopped at seven.
Buckeye senior Charlie Billingsley is a native of Birmingham, Mich., and graduated from Seaholm High School, site of the GWLL tourney.
The Buckeyes’ two goals were a season low and the fewest goals scored since a 9-3 loss at Navy Feb. 24, 2006.
