Men’s Lacrosse: Buckeyes Fall in NCAA Quarterfinals to No. 1 Duke, 21-10 – Ohio State Buckeyes

ITHACA, N.Y. Ohio State was eliminated from the 2008 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship after a 21-10 loss to top-seed Duke in the quarterfinals at Schoellkopff Field in Ithaca, N.Y., Sunday. The Buckeyes, who were making their first appearance in the round of 8, end their season 11-6 (4-1/t-1st GWLL). Top-ranked Duke improves to 18-1 and advances to the semifinals, where it will take on Johns Hopkins in Foxborough, Mass., Saturday.
Against Duke, three Buckeyes senior Kevin Buchanan, junior Peet Poillon and sophomore Mario Ventiquattro each contributed four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Joel Dalgarno had two points on a goal and an assist.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring on sophomore Mario Ventiquattro’s man-up goal 30 seconds into the game. The Blue Devils scored the next 10 goals, starting with Zack Greer’s goal at 12:47 to tie the game. The Blue Devils scored 16 seconds apart at 10:39 (Brad Ross) and 10:23 (Matt Danowski) and followed with man-up goals by Ross and Greer, sandwiched around a tally from Steve Schoeffel. Max Quinzani scored two of the final three goals of the quarter (4:00, :22 man-up), with Schoeffel also tallying. Duke led 9-1 at the end of the first quarter.
After Ross scored 12:59 into the second quarter, Ohio State ended the Blue Devils’ run at 12:43 when Buchanan found Dalgarno alone by the cage. Greer, the NCAA’s all-time leader in career goals, scored the next two goals for Duke at 10:23 and 7:50 and Poillon scored unassisted for the Buckeyes at 7:22. There was no more scoring in the quarter, as the Blue Devils took a 12-3 lead into halftime. The Buckeyes won 5-of-6 faceoffs in the second quarter and 11-of-17 in the first half.
Duke, the 2007 NCAA tournament runner-up, outscored the Buckeyes, 7-3, in the third quarter to lead 19-6 through three periods. Buchanan opened the scoring in the quarter at 14:14. Duke scored the next two goals, with Quinzani tallying at 13:24 and Greer following with a man-up goal at 12:03. The Buckeyes scored back-to-back goals at 8:26 and 7:43. Ventiquattro found Poillon for the first goal before Poillon set up James Green. Duke scored four goals in the final 5:57, including two goals from Quinzani 50 seconds apart (3:40 and 2:30) and goals 10 seconds apart from Greer and Nick O’Hara at 1:56 and 1:46.
In the fourth quarter, Duke scored the first two goals, from Chris Loftus at 12:25 and Mike Catalino at 9:15. The Buckeyes then scored the game’s final four goals. Ventiquattro set up sophomore Andrew Stimmel at 8:35 before Poillon found Ventiquattro at 6:19. Buchanan set up Jeff Ryan for a man-down goal at 3:02 and then closed out the scoring after taking a pass from Dalgarno at 2:39.
In the game, Duke outshot the Buckeyes, 50-39, including 18-4 in the first quarter. Buckeye senior Stefan Schroder made 12 saves, with eight in the first half. Duke’s Dan Loftus had 13 saves and allowed six goals in 48:44. Rob Schroeder played the final 11:16 and gave up four goals, making three saves.
Ohio State won 18-of-34 faceoffs in the contest, with junior Nick Carr going 15-14.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-3 on extra-man chances in the game and Duke converted 4-of-9 opportunities.
For Duke, Greer had a career-best 11 points in the game, including six goals. Quinzani had five goals and six points.
Game Notes
The contest was the final game for 11 Buckeye seniors in the Scarlet and Gray Mat Ballay, Charlie Billingsley, Buchanan, Matt Cornell, Bill Curry, Chris Friel, Josh Funk, Steve McKinlay, Ricky Pages, Peter Schell and Schroder.
Buchanan ended the year as the team’s leader in points with 76, one ahead of Dalgarno with 75. Buchanan’s 76 points are the fourth-best mark in a single season for a Buckeye, while Dalgarno’s 75 rank fifth in the record books. Buchanan had a team-best 44 goals, tying for sixth in a single season. Dalgarno’s team-high 35 assists are the fourth-most for a Buckeye in a single campaign. Dalgarno had 40 goals to rank ninth, with Buchanan’s 32 helpers tying for seventh.
Buchanan, the 2008 GWLL Player of the Year, ends his career second in program history with 175 career points (97g, 78a), behind only Terry Gilmore, who had 250 points (123g, 127a) from 1976-79. He is fourth in the record book for career assists and ninth in career goals. Buchanan had a point in each of the last 46 games of his collegiate career (93-74-167), had multiple points in each of his last 29 games and closed it out with a 26-game goal-scoring streak.
Dalgarno has 93 goals, 73 assists and 166 points for the Scarlet and Gray to rank third in program history in points and seventh in career assists.
Ryan ends the season with a career-best 38 points, ranking fourth on the team, including 25 goals.
Poillon, in his first season as a Buckeye, was third on the team with 40 points, ranking third with 32 goals.
Ventiquattro had a team-best eight man-up goals this season. His four points vs. Duke matched his career best, set twice before and he also had a career-high tying two assists vs. the Blue Devils. He had a 19-7-26 line on the year.
Stimmel, in his first season at Ohio State, had a career-best three goals and four points.
Carr ended the season first on the team with 75 groundballs, including seven vs. Duke.
Funk had a career-best five groundballs against the Blue Devils.
