Wake Forest Has Opening-Round Lead at NCAA Central Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

Demon Deacon Brendan Gielow shoots low round of 69
COLUMBUS, Ohio Wake Forest sits atop the leaderboard after one round of play at the NCAA Central Regional. The Demon Deacons shot a 6-over 290 on the par 71, 7,419-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus. Alabama, the top seed of the regional and No. 3 seed overall, is back by two shots with a team score of 292.
Oklahoma State, who is trying to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 62nd consecutive season, is third with an opening round of 293. Florida is one stroke back in fourth place.
Brendan Gielow, of Wake Forest, was the only player in the field to break 70 and leads all individuals at 2-under 69. Five players are a stroke back, including Michigan’s Alexander Sitompul who carded a tournament-best six birdies on the day.
In all, 16 players are within three shots of the lead. The two of the top golfers in the field, Alabama’s Michael Thompson, 2007 U.S. Amateur runner-up and 2008 Masters participant, and Oklahoma State’s Richie Fowler, the top-ranked collegiate golfer in the nation, opened with scores of 78 and 74, respectively.
Second round action begins Friday morning at 7 a.m. Teams will tee off of Nos. 1 and 10.
