COLUMBUS, Ohio The 14th-ranked Ohio State rowing team will travel to Belleville, Mich., Saturday for the 2008 Big Ten championship. Ohio State came in third at the conference championship last year behind Minnesota and Michigan.
Last Time Out
Ohio State hosted the Big Ten Challenge April 19 at Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio. The First and Second Varsity Eights went undefeated in the event. The Second Varsity Eight wrapped up its regular season with a perfect record, going 10-0.
The First Varsity Eight (4-5) defeated Wisconsin in its morning race. The Buckeyes finished with a time of 6:45.2 ahead of the Badgers 6:50.4. In its afternoon race, Ohio State beat Iowa to finish 2-0. The Scarlet and Gray clocked in at 6:54.9, while the Hawkeyes finished at 7:05.4.
The Second Varsity Eight garnered a perfect season after finishing 2-0 in the Big Ten Challenge. The Buckeyes clocked in at 6:56.1 to defeat Wisconsin (7:11.8) in its morning race. Ohio State concluded its regular season with a win over Iowa in the afternoon. The Hawkeyes finished at 7:28.7 behind the Scarlet and Gray’s time of 7:06.5.
The First Varsity Four went 1-1 in the challenge, falling to Wisconsin in its morning race with a time of 7:47.8. The Badgers clocked in at 7:43.7. Ohio State recovered in its afternoon race defeating Iowa. The Buckeyes finished at 8:05.3 in front of the Hawkeyes 8:33.5.
The Second Varsity Four fell to Wisconsin in both the afternoon and morning races. State clocked in 8:20.3 behind the Badgers 7:52.9. Wisconsin finished with a time of 8:21.3 in the afternoon ahead of the Buckeyes 8:55.5.
The First and Second Novice Eights fell to Wisconsin and Iowa, respectively, in its morning and afternoon races. The First Novice Eight finished its regular season 1-7, while the Second Novice Eight finished with a 2-8 mark.
Conference Competition
No. 16 Minnesota
Defending Big Ten Rowing Champion Minnesota hosted No. 6 Michigan State and No. 9 Michigan April 19. The Gophers First Varsity Eight fell to both top-ten ranked teams.
Minnesota opened its spring season with four wins over then ranked seventh Tennessee March 22.
The Gophers competed in a non-scoring event against Iowa April 6 on the Mississippi River.
No. 11 Michigan
To conclude its regular season, Michigan’s First Varsity Eight defeated Louisville and then-No. 15 Minnesota in Minneapolis April 19. The two victories helped the Wolverines earn Big Ten Boat of the Week April 22.
Michigan made its third trip to Columbus, Ohio, April 12. The Wolverines garnered four wins out of six races against then-No. 9 Tennessee, then ranked No. 11 Ohio State and Bucknell.
The Wolverines traveled from Ann Arbor, Mich., March 22 to compete in a non-scoring race with the Scarlet and Gray and Alabama. Michigan then joined Ohio State in the Big Ten/ACC duals April 5, defeating Duke in the morning races, but falling to Virginia to conclude the event.
No. 6 Michigan State
The Spartans completed their 2008 regular season at Minnesota, defeating the Gophers in the morning and Louisville in the afternoon April 19.
Michigan State’s Novice Eight and First Varsity Four defeated Virginia in the morning races at the Virginia Invitational April 12. The Spartans then beat Oregon State in the First Varsity, Second Varsity Eights and Second Varsity Four races in the afternoon.
The Spartans hosted their only home regatta April 5, with the First Varsity, Second Varsity Eights and First Varsity Four defeating Notre Dame and Indiana respectively at Grand River Park.
The Spartans’ garnered Big Ten Boat of the Week April 1 and April 22.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin competed in the Big Ten Challenge in Columbus, Ohio, April 19. The Badgers won 10 races out of 12 events against then-No. 14 Ohio State, Indiana and Iowa.
In the Virginia Invitational, Wisconsin’s First Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Eight defeated Columbia April 13 at Rivanna Reservoir in Lake Monticello, Va.
The Badgers also competed in the Longhorn Invitational, defeating Duke, Tulsa, Texas, Texas Crew and Iowa March 23. The First Varsity Four won Big Ten Boat of the Week for its performance at the invitational.
Iowa
The Hawkeyes traveled to Columbus, Ohio, April 19 for the Big Ten Challenge where the program garnered four victories.
The Hawkeyes’ First Varsity Eight garnered Big Ten Boat of the Week honors April 15 after defeating George Washington, Navy and St. Joseph’s at the George Washington Invitational April 12.
Iowa competed against then-No. 12 Minnesota on the Mississippi River April 6. The First Varsity Eight went 2-2, while both the Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four went 0-4 against the Gophers.
Indiana
The Hoosiers’ Second Varsity Eight claimed the program’s only victory in the Big Ten Challenge over Iowa at Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio, April 19.
The Hoosiers came in second at the State of Indiana championships April 13. Indiana fell to then- No. 16 Notre Dame, but defeated Purdue at Eagle Creek Park, Ind.
Indiana traveled to East Lansing, Mich,, April 6 to compete against Michigan State, Miami (Fla.) and Notre Dame. The Hoosiers’ Varsity Eight fell to the Hurricanes and the then-No. 8 Spartans.
Indiana’s First Varsity Eight garnered Big Ten Boat of the Week honors April 1 after defeating Dayton and Eastern Michigan.
Weekend Weather
There is a 30 percent chance of showers Saturday in Belleville, Mich. The temperature is expected to reach a high of 70 degrees with southeast winds at 11 mph.
2007 Big Ten Championships
The 2007 Big Ten championships were hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Lake Wingra in Madison, Wis., April 28. Minnesota took first place with 150 points followed by the Wolverines in second-place with 117 points. Ohio State (103 points) beat Michigan State (102 points) for third place by a point. Fifth place went to Wisconsin (87 points) ahead of Iowa (49 points) and Indiana (33 points).
Ohio State Garners Big Ten Boat of the Week Honors?
The Second Varsity Eight garnered Big Ten Boat of the Week honors April 8 when it recorded a 2-0 mark in the Big Ten/ACC duals April 5 at Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes defeated Virginia in its morning race, finishing at 6:30.8. The Cavaliers clocked in at 6:35.9. The Ohio State crew ended the day with a victory over Duke with a time of 6:33.5, ahead of the Blue Devils’ 6:56.6.
Kirsch Inducted into Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame?
Last September, Connie Kirsch (1998-2002) became the first rower to be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. She helped the Buckeyes earn their first Big Ten championship in 2002. She was part of the First Varsity Eight that won the grand final in the league championships and was named Big Ten Co-Rower of the year, a first in program history. That same varsity eight squad took first in the Central Region championship grand final and they finished the season with a then-program best fourth-place finish at the NCAA championships.
Kirsch’s individual accomplishments include earning first-team All-America honors in 2002 to contribute to her second-team honors in 2000 and 2001. She also was a three-time first-team All-Big Ten and All-Central Region selection in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Kirsch was an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2001 and 2002, as well as a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
