Ohio State golfers battle poor conditions in Greenville, S.C.
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team fell back five spots to 10th place in round two of the Furman Intercollegiate Saturday with a team score of 18-over 306. The Buckeyes battled cold and rainy conditions in Greenville, S.C., on the par 72, 6,825-yard Furman University Golf Course. Just after 10 a.m., there was a weather delay of more than two hours because of lightning and heavy rain. Play resumed at 12:45 p.m. and was suspended again at 7:50 p.m. because of darkness. First round leader Tennessee-Chattanooga is the clubhouse leader at 1-over par 577, with some teams yet to finish.
Freshman Bo Hoag led the Buckeyes today with a 2-over 74, a solid round in the weather conditions. Hoag is tied for 25th and is only two strokes out of 14th. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native carded three birdies in the second round increased his tournament total to five.
Senior co-captains Kyle Coconis and Zach Sebert both shot 77’s. Coconis, from Zanesville, Ohio, had a single birdie in the round and is in 37th place. Sebert carded three more birdies in round and the Grove City, Ohio, product now has seven for the tournament. He begins the final round in 90th place.
Freshman Brad Smith, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, and sophomore Patrick Simard rounded out the Buckeyes with rounds of 78 and 81, respectively. Smith, a native of Peru, Ind., had two birdies to go along with 10 pars, but two double-bogeys hampered his scorecard sending him to a tie for 81st.
Simard got off to a shaky start on the front nine when the weather was the worst. The Marbella, Spain, native bogeyed three of his first four holes to go out in 43, but was able to pick up a couple birdies on the back nine. He dropped to a tie for 58th.
Round two of the Furman Intercollegiate will resume at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. Ohio State begins its final round at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Live scoring for the event is available on www.golfstat.com.
