Simard Fires a 65 as Buckeyes Win Tri-Match to Open Spring Season – Ohio State Buckeyes

Sophomore one of three Buckeyes to finish under-par as Ohio State wins first event since 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio Sophomore Patrick Simard shot a career-best 65 to lead the Ohio State men’s golf team to victory in a single-round tri-match against Iowa State and Florida Atlantic Saturday at the par 72, 7,277-yard Crooked Cat Course at the Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Orlando, Fla.
The victory opened the team’s spring season and was the first win of an event for the Buckeyes since the 2004 season when they won both the Marshall Invitational and Big Ten Championships. Ohio State finished with a team score of 6-under 354 and won the tri-match by nine strokes over Iowa State and had a 17-stroke advantage over Florida Atlantic.
The format included the best five out of six scores and the Buckeyes had three players finish under-par. Simard had the lowest score of the tournament with his 7-under 65. It was the third round in the 60’s this season for the native of Marbella, Spain.
Tying for third were freshman Bo Hoag and junior Dan Rush with scores of 70 (-2). For Hoag, it was his sixth round under-par in his young career, while Rush recorded his second under-par this season.
Rounding out the Ohio State competitors were senior Kyle Coconis with a 74, freshman Brad Smith with a 75 and senior Zach Sebert with a 77.
The Buckeyes will continue their spring season Feb. 25-26 when they return to Orlando, Fla., for the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate.
