COLUMBUS, Ohio Men’s lacrosse seniors attackman Joel Dalgarno and defenseman Scott Matthews have been selected team captains for the squad for 2008-09, head coach Nick Myers announced Thursday. The duo was selected by a vote of their teammates. Dalgarno, Matthews and the Buckeyes are traveling to Annapolis, Md., this weekend for the 2008 Navy Lacrosse Fall Classic.
Dalgarno, from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, has been named the team’s Offensive MVP the past two seasons. He is a two-time first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League selection, was an honorable mention All-American in 2008 and was the 2006 GWLL Newcomer of the Year. He led the Buckeyes with 35 assists last year, ranking second in goals (40) and points (75). Dalgarno enters 2009 third in program history with 166 career points, ranking seventh in assists and just outside the Top 10 in goals. He has a point in all but one game of his Buckeye career.
Matthews, a native of Nottingham, Md., was a first-team All-GWLL selection in 2008. He started all 17 games a year ago and has earned the start in 44 games in his Buckeye career. Matthews had a career-best 31 groundballs and recorded his first career goal against Quinnipiac last season. He is the recipient of the Michael R. Breschi Scholarship for 2008-09, was the team’s Unsung Hero award co-winner in 2007 and the Paul Hartman Most Improved Player in 2006.
In Annapolis Saturday, the Buckeyes will face Johns Hopkins at noon on the Farragut turf field and Cornell at 2:30 p.m. on the Farragut grass field.
Parents and fans going to the games will not be allowed to drive on the Academy grounds. For parking, there are two options. Fans may park in a legal parking spot downtown and walk through Gate 1, or park at Navy Marine Corps Stadium and take the free shuttle. Note there is a boat show in Annapolis that will make parking difficult. The shuttle service will start at 9 a.m. and run until 8 p.m., running to the boat show and loop back. There is a fee to park at Navy Marine Corps Stadium. Everyone over age 16 must bring a valid government issued picture ID to gain access to the Academy and to utilize the shuttle.
